This is only 12 miles from where my family lives. When you use AI in any form, people are affected directly
I completely agree!! Sometimes teachers can be intimidated by the thought of publishing, but it can be done and there are folks out here willing to help them. #literacies
I continue to help promote community wide book clubs that invite both parents and students to read challenged books each year. This is in collaboration with a local non-for-profit organization. Continue doing the work and pushing forward what needs to happen. #literacies
Find your village who is willing to do the work alongside you. It starts there. Then find additional accomplices who are willing to accompany the effort.
I have more questions than stepsโฆ (1) How are we creating systems of support beyond institutions of higher education and P-12 schools? (2) What strategies can we bring from our ancestors to the forefront of our efforts to maintain our inclusive and equitable futures? #literacies

I have many scholars whose work toward a more equitable educational landscape has inspired me. Some scholars include Tiffany Nyachae, Grace Player, Danielle Filipiak, April Baker Bell, , Monica Ybarra, David Low, M Cioe-Pena, Ebony Thomas, Christian Hines, and many, many more. #literacies
In P-12 schools, the teachers, staff, and administration determine the pulse of the school. You cannot regulate culturally relevant pedagogical approaches or culturally responsive practices. It emanates from you in your interactions, planning, etc. #literacies
I loved the testing grades because once a principal sees that your approach produces the needed results, they leave you alone. 3rd and 4th grade for life! ๐ #literacies
As a classroom teacher, nothing caused policies to fail more than when communities stood with teachers. This is what pushes change. #literacies
Strengthen our ties to the community. I continue to reflect on community engaged work from scholars (Arlette Willis, Michael Cole, Carol D. Lee, Elizabeth Moje, etc). The community is able and willing to support us even when P-12 schools are being manipulated to do otherwise. #literacies
Yes, but some educators within those states are starting to push back because they see the inequities increasing in terms of student academic outcomes. I am hopeful that changes come before those gaps increase any further. #literacies
In some states, the curriculum limits that information in hopes that teachers will commit to another certificate program to gain access to that knowledge. #literacies
We often talk about learning from our ancestors. Our field and country spent decades looking for a way to tackle issues of equity as it pertains to womenโs rights, racial discrimination, etc. We have the roadmaps laid out before us. We must use them to combat the barriers we now face. #literacies
Systems of oppression and privilege. The privileged few maintain a banking concept of education (Freire) that removes critical thinking and executive functioning from learning. It is a shift away from autonomy and an emphasis on the teacher as a facilitator. #literacies
Barriers to access. As a former elementary educator, I canโt imagine what I would do today. The removal of books, professional autonomy, and personhood is destroying the fabric of K-12 schooling. We now see districts seeking to remove the use of 504 plans. #literacies
Barriers. A lot has been mentioned about the removal of grant funding for DEI work. I, like many others in literacy, have not benefited from federal grants for the work we do. It is what it is. If schools wonโt let us work there we CAN and WILL still do the work within the community. #literacies
C. Gordon wrote having diversity in literature is important because it helps people become more compassionate toward others and allows them to help push the lever toward true equality. Diversity allows us to see beyond outward differences and look deeper for common interests, values, and attitudes.
I use questioning to widen students' thinking and avenues. While it does not always work, it has led students to bring in newer perspectives that they would have dismissed previously. We teach the truth and all sides of what makes truth reality.
Individually we must commit to the use of inclusive practices amidst the chaos of change around us. It is a personal commitment that far exceeds the reach of policies. #literacies
Iโll use this example, the government states that if a baby cries, donโt pick it up. You are supposed to leave it there crying. Would you? No. Almost everyone would try to console the baby. The same goes for DEI. We see how inclusive practices support students. We will NOT simply walk away.
Exactly!
My definition of literacy cont.: Literacy is more than reading and writing in schools; it is the skills we use to engage with the world, how we understand our place in the word, and is a direct reflection of our culture, values, and power structures. #literacies
My definition of literacy: Literacy is shaped by and reflects our societal and political environment which makes it closely connected to the education system.
Ernest Morrell calls on our field to realize that much of our research is defined by methodological rigor at the expense of the people and communities we seek to understand. #literacies
Audre Lorde teaches us that โequityโ is deeply rooted in our understanding of intersectionality and the fight for social justice. We should ensure that individuals receive what they need to be successful. #literacies
