Cleaning my bookshelves I found this 2010 policy report (by EUISS) anticipating scenarios for 2025. This is the worst they could think of. How sweetly optimistic!

WSJ: “David Ellison offered assurances to Trump administration officials that if he bought Warner, he’d make sweeping changes to CNN, a common target of President Trump’s ire. Trump has told people close to him that he wants new ownership of CNN as well as changes to CNN programming”

Europe’s summer of extreme weather caused €43bn of short-term losses, analysis finds
Greatest damage from heat, drought and flooding done in Cyprus, Greece, Malta and Bulgaria
The violent weather that battered Europe this summer caused short-term economic losses of at least €43bn, according to an EU-wide estimate, with costs expected to rise to €126bn by 2029.
The immediate hit to the economy from a single brutal summer of heat, drought and flooding amounted to 0.26% of the EU’s economic output in 2024, according to the rapid analysis, which has not been submitted for peer review but is based on relationships between weather and economic data that were published in an academic study this month. Finally, I suggest that architecture offers a potent metaphor for thinking more productively about the democratic affordances of expertise.

I draw examples from ecological activism to show how disruptive acts and expert knowledge is used together to change how the world is perceived, antagonism brought to surface, equality enacted and the constitution of the public reimagined.

Specifically, I argue that bringing thinkers like Mouffe and Rancière to bear on the questions of democratic expertise adds an important perspective to the existing literature, while at the same time prompting us to revamp radical democratic theory itself, moving beyond the critique of technocracy.

Hopefully there is still time to correct the course and that @tieteentekijat.bsky.social and @sivista.bsky.social and @professoriliitto.bsky.social etc. are doing their best to avoid the most catastrophic outcome.
Mea culpa to international colleagues for the unrealistic rosy picture I provided. /3

This is infuriatingly shortsighted, and in many ways contradicts their own programme – not to mention ambitions relating to societal security and democratic self-governance. It also bears uncanny family resemblance (as watered down version, of course) to the attacks on academic freedom globally. /2

At WPSA mid-April, I told colleagues we had a parliamentary agreement on research funding—but that turned out to be optimistic. The current @kokoomus.bsky.social led gov is decreasing basic funding while cosmetically increasing politically controlled modes of funding. /1
