To mark this day, we were pleased to join an event organised by the MEPs for Action on Obesity and the @easoobesity.bsky.social.
The discussion brought together policymakers, experts, patients, and stakeholders to address obesity as a chronic disease and a gateway to other NCDs, such as diabetes.
Today we mark World Obesity Day 🌍
Obesity and diabetes are deeply interconnected conditions, sharing many of the same root causes. Both are chronic, recurrent diseases that come with similar challenges and long-term complications.
On this #WorldObesityDay, we highlight that #obesity, #diabetes & #cardiovascular disease are not separate battles, they're part of the same global health challenge.
The EU Safe Hearts Plan is a concrete step toward change.

We are calling for harmonised, CGM-specific EU standards to strengthen safety, transparency and trust. Clear and robust requirements would protect patients and support innovation by ensuring that high-quality devices can reach people faster.

This gap can create uncertainty for people living with diabetes and their healthcare teams - and may ultimately impact safety and clinical decision-making.
Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices are transforming diabetes care, helping people reduce the daily burden of the condition.
As the market expands and more devices enter the EU, one issue remains: there are currently no EU CGM-specific regulatory guidelines or harmonised quality standards.

Such standards would not only lead to increased safety and better transparency, but also speed up access to innovation, while making sure that only devices that meet robust safety and performance criteria are available in Europe.
This regulatory gap matters. It directly affects patient safety, clinical confidence, and fair market access to high‑quality technologies.
👉 That’s why we are calling for harmonised, CGM‑specific EU standards.
❗ But here’s the challenge: there is still no CGM‑specific regulatory guidance or harmonised quality standards in the EU.
This means:
🔴 Untransparent evaluation of devices entering the EU market
🔴 Difficulties comparing existing devices
🔴 Potential risks for people with diabetes
💡 Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices are reshaping diabetes care.
They ease the daily burden for people living with #diabetes and improve glycaemic control, especially as more devices integrate with insulin pumps for automated insulin delivery.
