Key insights from her talk:
-ABA grew out of institutional abuse—not inclusion.
It was never designed to support Autistic people, but to normalize and control them.
-ABA’s dominance stems from aggressive lobbying, not scientific merit.

Session 2 of Beyond Behaviourism featured Anne Borden King, Autistic advocate and author of ABA: The Troubling History and Legacy of Today’s Most Popular Autism Therapy. Anne delivered a powerful talk on the deep roots and lasting harms of ABA—and why we must move beyond it.

Some Key Ideas:
-Behaviour is a signal, not a problem.
-Token boards/ smiley charts don’t teach regulation—they teach masking.

He dismantled behaviourist strategies such as sticker charts, token systems and ABA and shared real stories—including the heartbreaking “wool hat” incident—to show why co-regulation, compassion, and felt safety must replace punishment and control.

‘Beyond Behaviourism’ (Alliance Against Seclusion & Restraint) began today. Registrants get access to recordings so it’s not too late to sign up! Session 1 featured Greg Santucci, Pediatric OT,reminding us we don’t need ‘better behaviour’ —we need better understanding.

I have completely lost patience with deficit/medical model language in describing autistic traits. Why can't the language be neutral? Why can't we describe eye contact as "inconsistent" rather than "poor"?

How do we listen to consent (assent) from people who do not use standardised forms of communication? (2min watch with chocolate! Click if you value consent for all ;-) )

A fellow educator witnessed a colleague stop a child from stimming—basic hand stimming. They held the child’s hands still to do this! The stimming was completely safe. No reason for alarm, no reason to stop them except the adult’s need to exert compliance to neuronormativity. This needs to STOP!

Might it not also be a bit of dyspraxia too though? I bite my cheek or tongue or lip by accident at least couple of times a week.

Nothing about my comment is defending him or his actions.That is what you extrapolated from it. Let’s move on to more important dialogues. He could have done so much good with his position but instead he is one more fool for the mad king.
