Today’s tragedy did not have to happen. Government must do more to invest in our communities.
It is outrageous that in 2026 this is how law enforcement are responding to a call to assist someone in obvious need of mental health support. We can do better by those struggling, by their families, and by our law enforcement with training and programs like Social Work Law Enforcement.
In the last month, Hartford police have responded to two mental health calls with gunfire. Today’s incident in Blue Hills—caught on video, is beyond difficult to watch. My heart breaks for those present and those impacted, and I will keep those who were shot in my thoughts.
