This is an excellent analogy, because my recollection from grade school is that the pen on the right looks fun and exciting, and then you play with it for a few minutes and realize it's not actually useful for anything and in fact makes some tasks more cumbersome, and never think about it again.
I read her autobiography years ago and even though it was written almost a century ago it was sad to see how little we have advanced as a society...

I do remember that as a child I found the film very unsettling because I thought it was unfair and hard on the little mouse. I don't remember the plot, only how it made me feel.
