Curious whether 'screen time' includes more traditional media such as TV shows and movies? (Or is limited to algorithmic-driven social media and online scrolling?)
@catielila
Co-author of "Revolutionary Taiwan" (Cambria Press, 2024) and author of "Parliament in the British Political Imagination, 1550-1600" (forthcoming, Manchester University Press). Early modern Britainist by training; now living and teaching in Taipei

Look what I got in the mail! @catielila.bsky.social @jimmillward.bsky.social @jagevans.bsky.social and Taomo Zhou
The sheer moral injury of being alive as a middle class American and having nothing you can do but post and peaceful protest with a cute little posterโฆ man, Iโm really worried weโll spend the rest of our lives living in shame from this moment. Not secondhand shame
You are amazing, @pybaubry.bsky.social! :) Thank you so much for continuing your donations and support! :) (In 2021, we managed to raise about $50k USD for 5 local organizations in Taiwan).

In 2021, when the pandemic hit Taiwan, nice people on Twitter launched a fundraising for local NGOs (I have the feeling @catielila.bsky.social was among them, apologies if I'm wrong). Since then, I have been supporting the Homeless Taiwan Association. Here's their website for more info:
Yes. And yes!!
Thank you Gina for bringing us all together! :)
Delighted that our Decolonizing Chinese History Roundtable is now available in Chinese translation as a book! Thanks to the wonderful team at Uli books and for my brilliant co-authors @jimmillward.bsky.social @catielila.bsky.social Taomo Zhou, and James Evans

Thank you, Lev :) An honor to be reviewed by you!
I am honored to have reviewed @catielila.bsky.social and @mhar4.bsky.social's book "Revolutionary Taiwan: Making Nationhood in a Changing World Order" for The China Quarterly. I highly recommend this book, and I hope my review convinces you to check it out!

โThere is no single Taiwan story, much as various groups have continually tried to stamp one imprint on its past and future. It is a glorious cacophony.โ Michelle T. King reviews two new books on Taiwanโs modern history. https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/one-island-many-histories/
Congrats, Lev! :)
Sincerest thanks, James! From both me and @mhar4.bsky.social. So grateful for the way you've engaged with the book :)
Another review of the excellent 'Revolutionary Taiwan' @catielila.bsky.social

Review of Mark Harrison and Catherine Chou's book 'Revolutionary Taiwan'
"Packed with elegant analogies, deftly illustrated examples, and subtle but clear, compelling arguments, this book is both educational and immensely enjoyable." [โฆ]
The book is fairly essayistic and digressive - we wanted to bring that kind of spirit to the writing, since so much of what is written about Taiwan is by necessity direct, compressed, highly empirical and data-driven. So it was a bit of an experiment in style and approach :)
Hello my friend, I have not forgotten you. I just made a small donation. You and your family are in my prayers. I wish only better things going for you all going forward ๐
I look forward to reading this book by two of the most astute observers of Taiwanese history and society.
For anyone interested in truly understanding Taiwan and its people, I would recommend you seek out their writing.
Thank you so much for these kind words, Timothy! Mark and I would be honored to have you as a reader ๐ cc: @mhar4.bsky.social
Big thanks to @jamesbaron.bsky.social for his review of "Revolutionary Taiwan" in this week's Taipei Times: "Taking an innovative approach to Taiwanโs contradictory status both 'outside & at the center' of the internat'l system, this book is a superb introduction" www.taipeitimes.com/News/feat/ar...
Thank you so much for the shoutout! Just subscribed to your newsletter as well! :)

Warmest thanks to @jamesbaron.bsky.social from me and @catielila.bsky.social for this generous review of our book "Revolutionary Taiwan: Making nationhood in a changing world order."

Thanks for reading, Graham :) I also hate having one-day-a-week, 3-hour-at-a-time classes. Terrible structure, I would like to have a word with whoever decided that all Taiwanese college classes should be arranged this way :/
For Broadsides, the blog of the North American Conference on British Studies, I wrote on restarting my academic career in Taiwan, a place that underwent a fierce struggle for democracy & freedom of speech in the 80s & 90s, at a time when both are under threat in the US www.nacbs.org/post/teachin...
๐ to @briankerg.bsky.social for having me & @mhar4.bsky.social on @cimsec.bsky.social's podcast to discuss "Revolutionary Taiwan". Why was democratization in Taiwan linked to demilitarization & why does Taiwan need to remilitarize now to protect its democracy? ๐น to learn! cimsec.org/sea-control-...
Thank you so much, Brian, for having us on the podcast. Grateful to you and your listeners! :)
I had a blast hosting @catielila.bsky.social and @mhar4.bsky.social on the #SeaControl podcast at @cimsec.bsky.social to discuss their book, "Revolutionary #Taiwan." Give it a listen! #ReadFightWin
