Mercury's base once had a more blocky design... more akin to it's appearance in Unit Down Charge. I don't know exactly why I redesigned it. I liked this version.
Also those guys be MOVIN'!

In Unit Down Charge, I was going to have all three of them fight at the same time for the final level, but found that I didn't build the health systems to support three bosses at once. XD
NOOOO. I ALWAYS WIN. I ALWAYS WIN. I ALWAYS WIN. I ALWAAAAAS WIIIIIN!!!
*PhhhQqq!* PhhhQqq!* *PhhhQqq!*
Do-Do-Do-DoDooooooo... Doo!
Did you know the Enemy Captains in the original Unit Down game had high-poly fully rigged models? They are never shown in-game, so I don't know why I ever made them. ๐
Yeah I definitely noticed that a lot of people who like Cabal-Shooters generally aren't in the game for a top-down strategy element, lol.
10 years ago, Unit Down was going to be an Isometric strategy game, with controlled battle sequenaces. The concept was neat, but proved too hard to merge the two completely different genre's in a satisfying way. #indiegame #indiedev
I know this isn't related to gamedev but I HAD to share!
Thanks to a kind soul, my Neopets Lord Kass gallery now has one of the rarest items of him! I AM SO HAPPY YOU HAVE NO IDEA AHHHH!
I will earn your trust again someday. I won't ask for forgiveness though. *nods*
Did you know Deon used to be a bunny in Unit Down?
Also, the base used to have dialogue in this version. Don't know why I dropped that.
OH I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS AHHHHHH!
It defo has a certain charm! ๐
I'll be sure to post what I find as I come across it! Back when Deon was a bunny and Garrison was a nerd with glasses. It was such a development journey xD
I even have footage from when I had the game as a top-down strategy game lmao. It is insane how many genre's the game went through before hitting where it did, haha. Im glad I didnt delete all of it.
Went to go follow them and realized that you are too late, I already am.
lmao, well I appreciate the kind words, but by all means I can definitely tell I made this 12 years ago haha.
I think it's really cool to see how far it's developed since then though. I kept hiding this stuff because I was almost ashamed of it, but I think it still deserves a lil' light in the sun!
12 yeas ago I made an "Intro Cutscene" for Unit Down, back when it was going to be a Metroidvania.
It's... rough.
But instead of hiding it, I'll share with ya'll so you can see that after 12 years, I'm still the same! XD

I think I know what I'm doing for my next game.
ok here's the other two lmao
Aw, too kind! I've definitely dabbled in a ton of different art styles over the years haha.
That's hilarious haha. I just found the playable demo I had for the game. Can safely say it was, in fact, not fire. ^.^'
But was neat to see it again!
It's funny how many versions of the game I've made over the years. I can't imagine going back to this, but it's really cool to see it again and where the project landed!
Forgotten.exe was my favorite, despite it being incredibly under-performing. Just wasn't popular. But it's the one I spent the most time on! I drew everything by hand and thought it was gonna be the next best thing, lol.
Honestly just years of experience making platformers. Before exe games, I had a good 20+ finished platformer games back when YoYo Games was a site. The rest is just playing with numbers and testing until it felt "right". Id argue to say testing took more time than actually makin' it.
I owe a lot to the Exe community forcing me to learn so many genre's in such a short amount of time, haha.
Well looks like the video was uploaded 2014? So it was at least in this state at that time! I just found and played the demo and OH MAN ITS ROUGH I'm glad I didn't stick with this haha.
Did you know, Unit Down originally started as a Metroidvania game? I don't know how the game evolved into a Cabal-Shooter.
Found an old archive, will probably post old prototype vids throughout the week.
I was wondering! Saw the alt text and just accepted it XD
Honestly Ive seen your work, and its really good!
Had I not already had my hired voices, Id have definately snag ya for a project.
lars talking to captain lars: "hey captain, how do you see through that visor" captain: (idk his name) oh it's a special visor yeah... lars (from monitor): "wonder how that works..." captain: mhmm...
