Oh yeah this actually did kind of pleasantly surprise me, everyone involved is full adult, the main premise from the very first chapter is that they are college students. The guy sucks serious ass though
She dumps him because she's like "I do think I love you but at this stage in my life and career" (she is an aspiring actress) "I can't have a boyfriend right now". And we also get a flashback chapter of her in high school talking with her mom about how she was ghosting all these guys that confessed to her (she was a pretty/popular girl) and how her mom drilled it into her that she needs to turn men down firmly so they can move on, and it's selfish to do otherwise. This is introduced to us as like, a core part of her moral philosophy On their date after she dumps him they separate but then bump into each other again coincidentally (they live together), and he finds out she's been hiding bad blisters on her feet for the whole date (she didn't want to say anything because he put so much effort into it). And even though she's rejected him at this point, he still offers to carry her on his back to go home And this gesture spurs a train of thought about how she really does love and care for him- after which he asks her if it's okay for him to keep loving for a little longer. And she says no. And they keep going back and forth and she keeps saying no. No. My answer is no. You have to move on. and I'm like awww. A show of how strong her moral character is and a display of her genuine love for him And then the guy finds out that she turned him down because of a specific large acting opportunity she got, with an end date. And the guy is like. OKAY SO SHE TURNED ME DOWN FOR HER CAREER? THAT MEANS SHE'LL DATE ME AFTER THIS ACTING JOB IS OVER RIGHT? ALRIGHT IM GOING TO SPEND THIS TIME MAKING MYSELF INTO THE IDEAL MAN FOR AFTER HER ACTING JOB IS OVER and im like BRUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH COME ONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
Extremely raw look into the psyche of the author and his fantasies here. I know it's already been made fun of to death, but the MC's character arc post-getting dumped is particularly egregious. I feel like it's something more advanced and sinister than just normal incelism
Every time she puts up a boundary the MC seems like he's genuinely going to comply and respect them but then factors outside of his control enable him to ignore them & he's just Ah gee whiz abt it. This happens in the recent chapters so I'm inclined to think this is a chronic condition of the story
I'm sure this isn't any kind of new observation or anything. But it's interesting to me how the girl puts up her (very reasonable) boundaries early and firmly, and the guy says he'll respect them, but then is continuously enabled by random circumstance (that he has no say in) to barrel past them
I read the first 6 and last 15(ish? everything after the dumping lol) chapters of Rent a Girlfriend by the way. Fascinating piece of media
