I reckon 'Zhou Enlai: The Last Perfect Revolutionary' is decent, and it's about half that. (I also have the doorstop book and look forward to being old and retired with the concentration to read it.)

the $400 billion figure is the amount that China theoretically agreed to in 2021 over a 25 year period. the amount *actually* spent so far is something like $3 billion, we think, or roughly a third of the direct cost of the Iran war to the U.S. so far.

This is no different from Putin saying MH17 was shot down by Ukraine or Assad saying rebels gassed themselves.

The United Kingdom is not only aiding and assisting the United States’ unlawful use of force against Iran but also is running the risk of committing an act of aggression itself.

The 1974 Definition of Aggression of the UN General Assembly includes the following:

I gave up my NYT sub because their opinion and news editorial position is Vichy coded.

I kept my WSJ sub because although the opinion section is trash the news writing is very good.

Maybe I should just sub to the FT, the best newpaper for the Left, and for enjoyers of reality-based news.

I really hope the American people can grasp the concept of linear time this go around because if the voters pull another β€œ2020 was during Biden’s term” and decide oil prices going up due to starting a war justified the war as punishment for oil prices going up, I swear to God…

You know how there were Japanese holdouts still fighting long after the end of WW2. It can be just like that except instead of Hiroo Onoda with his rifle and bayonet it's IRCG units with Scuds.

This new cycle of violence was all too predictable. For months, Israeli officials had signalled an escalation of their campaign against Hezbollah. Despite a ceasefire that ended a devastating 13-month war in 2024, Israel had continued with its bombing of Lebanon almost every day, saying the group was trying to rebuild its capabilities.
Hezbollah, however, had remained quiet, aware that any move would inevitably be met with a powerful retaliation.
