Latest attacks in Lebanon leave nearly 400 dead as two Israeli soldiers killed
Maybe the most impressive headline distortionism I've ever seen
I reckon 'Zhou Enlai: The Last Perfect Revolutionary' is decent, and it's about half that. (I also have the doorstop book and look forward to being old and retired with the concentration to read it.)
the $400 billion figure is the amount that China theoretically agreed to in 2021 over a 25 year period. the amount *actually* spent so far is something like $3 billion, we think, or roughly a third of the direct cost of the Iran war to the U.S. so far.

The United Kingdom is not only aiding and assisting the United Statesβ unlawful use of force against Iran but also is running the risk of committing an act of aggression itself.

I gave up my NYT sub because their opinion and news editorial position is Vichy coded.
I kept my WSJ sub because although the opinion section is trash the news writing is very good.
Maybe I should just sub to the FT, the best newpaper for the Left, and for enjoyers of reality-based news.
They're deeply silly and I love them.

FT comments section this morning - saying what everyone else is thinking, right?
This new cycle of violence was all too predictable. For months, Israeli officials had signalled an escalation of their campaign against Hezbollah. Despite a ceasefire that ended a devastating 13-month war in 2024, Israel had continued with its bombing of Lebanon almost every day, saying the group was trying to rebuild its capabilities. Hezbollah, however, had remained quiet, aware that any move would inevitably be met with a powerful retaliation.
