Hello—here’s the official trailer for UNDERLAND, based on my book of the same name, dir. by Rob Petit, with a haunting, glittering score by @hannahpeel.bsky.social, & the ‘Storyteller’ voiced by Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest). Hope you like it.

In UK/Irish cinemas 27 March.

Oil painting, 1938 landscape (William E Reid signature).

Oil painting, 1938 landscape (William E Reid signature).

Oil painting of three young women around a table. I particularly like the one on the right, who is fed up. Signature is tiny and illegible, and I am not going to mess around trying to clean it more than I have. It's shabbily splendid as it is.

Latest treasure from #SamBurns #EastLothian. I've cleaned them up a little, and the frames are on order so these are screenshots, but a massive hit of happy for a fiver each.

Sadie Maskery lives in Scotland by the sea. Her short stories can be found in publications including Extra Teeth, Odd Magazine and Starship Sloane. Her most recent poetry collections are 'Overheard Lovesongs' and 'The Usual Apologies', with poems printed in The Scotsman, Poetry Scotland, Red Ogre, and various other awesome places. She can be found on Bluesky as @saccharinequeen.bskyb.social. When not writing she enjoys ambling and doodling. (That’s the blurb I sent in full. I like the ambling and doodling bit so I am adding it back in.)

Wise old horticultural woman I met: “If you find a rabbit’s foot and tickle the leaves of your tomato plant with it your tomatoes will grow faster.”

Me: “Interesting. I might try that.”

Next-door’s rabbit, the following day: “Stop that, and put me the fuck down. I did not consent to this.”

Despair in these times nears paralysis. We’re sclerotic. Each impulse to resistance, rage, even to despair itself, feels withered, a nothingness. Yet there’s art. Music. At best it reminds us what’s possible, how miraculous human beings can be, even when the world & those who run it bellow otherwise

Just a regular reminder to please support your local theatre, café, bookstore, bakery, and library. We breathe life into these places when we support them.

Without us, they can't survive, and truthfully, without them, neither can we.

I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland.

And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.
