Shabbat table set up

February was horrifically terrible- personally and globally. Hoping this Shabbat (which fell on one of the nicest days in Copenhagen recently) will usher in less pain and grief.

like this isn't 2012, there are no national queer rights orgs who are flush with cash. Everyone I speak with is dramatically cutting their budgets. And red state queer orgs are always fighting uphill on a shoestring budget.

My challenge to you today is to google a red state queer org and donate.

DOGE cost the federal government 4 million years of institutional knowledge. These graphs tell the story. - The Boston Globe Amid Trump’s bureaucracy-slashing directives, the federal workforce shrunk by about 220,000 people in 2025.

β€œWe don’t have a government that’s properly staffed,” she said. β€œAll of these things [federal workers do] are really part of making life a little fairer, a little safer for the public. We’ve lost that.”

When I think about new technology I think about: Is this helping humanity? Is this hurting vulnerable populations? What does it do for labor/workers rights? Who does it benefit?

like thankfully for me it was mostly annoying, but for Global South scholars, this could actually create real risk for folks trying to come to the US for conferences, etc. Really poor judgment on whoever did this

Yeah like I understand that we all have our opinions on BDS. But giving our names and contact information to the ADL to say "hey if you support this, you are antisemitic" is a fucked email to get. Like, that crosses a line IMO

I will also say that it is so beyond messed up that I had the ADL in my inbox this week calling me antisemitic. I really hope whichever colleague submitted an *early career scholar* (and others) to the ADL rethinks their choices. It's intimidation (not to mention silly as I am a practicing Jew).

I am so tired after the 7 (!!) hour ISA Governin Council meeting. I am going to pocket a lot of feelings I had on the motions for the group chats but today was a really good example of why it's critical to know rules of stuff inside and outside. Also ISA please get a parliamentarian πŸ₯²

Relevant to today's conversation about AI's inherent sexism, here's an email from cognitive psychologist and early AI theorist Roger Schank, arguing to Epstein that women can't be truly intelligent, because they care too much about what other people think.

I think it would be wise for folks to pause and consider that the breathless headlines about cognitive decline of Gen Z are based in eugenics. There are def impacts to the onslaught of tech in schools (and many valid critiques) but I would encourage folks to avoid making this your *core* argument

This part right here. AI chat bots are a bandaid to a MUCH larger structural issue. The NYT article out today discusses how AI chat bots for health are not more useful than just looking things up online when just given straight to patients. We cannot tech our way out of this problem.

HORRIFYING -
Dismantling USAID & cancelling >80% of aid caused ~750,000 deaths by mid-2025

🧸Most were children
βŒ›οΈ Many died within the first year

😰 Preventable deaths were mainly from:
- HIV, TB, malaria
- Maternal & fetal deaths
- Malnutrition

Shabbat table set up

A late Shabbat Shalom! It’s been a … weird week. I’ve been pretty sick all week but also got great news on my book, Daniel received some good news, and we got a lot of great things rolling with our water governance project. Hoping a restful Shabbat will kick what’s left in my system.

Canada and Denmark are not exceptional and what's happening the US can happen in these places too. My jaw dropped hearing the blatantly racist comments from the Minister of Immigration in Denmark back in the fall. Yes, cut ties with the US but also recognize that you are not immune to these risks.

Opinion: How it feels to be an American living in Canada right now I’m standing on my neighbour's lawn, watching my house burn down. But I'm not powerless, and neither are you.

Being an American living in Denmark and Canada during this administration is.... something. I'm glad this author calls out the Canadian government's active collaborations with this regime here but also, the call is coming from inside the house in Canada too
