Shabbat table set up
February was horrifically terrible- personally and globally. Hoping this Shabbat (which fell on one of the nicest days in Copenhagen recently) will usher in less pain and grief.

like this isn't 2012, there are no national queer rights orgs who are flush with cash. Everyone I speak with is dramatically cutting their budgets. And red state queer orgs are always fighting uphill on a shoestring budget.
My challenge to you today is to google a red state queer org and donate.
βWe donβt have a government thatβs properly staffed,β she said. βAll of these things [federal workers do] are really part of making life a little fairer, a little safer for the public. Weβve lost that.β

When I think about new technology I think about: Is this helping humanity? Is this hurting vulnerable populations? What does it do for labor/workers rights? Who does it benefit?
like thankfully for me it was mostly annoying, but for Global South scholars, this could actually create real risk for folks trying to come to the US for conferences, etc. Really poor judgment on whoever did this
Yeah like I understand that we all have our opinions on BDS. But giving our names and contact information to the ADL to say "hey if you support this, you are antisemitic" is a fucked email to get. Like, that crosses a line IMO
Though Governin Council makes it sound so folksy
Governing***** -- y'all, my brain is mush from this damn meeting
I will also say that it is so beyond messed up that I had the ADL in my inbox this week calling me antisemitic. I really hope whichever colleague submitted an *early career scholar* (and others) to the ADL rethinks their choices. It's intimidation (not to mention silly as I am a practicing Jew).
I am so tired after the 7 (!!) hour ISA Governin Council meeting. I am going to pocket a lot of feelings I had on the motions for the group chats but today was a really good example of why it's critical to know rules of stuff inside and outside. Also ISA please get a parliamentarian π₯²

Relevant to today's conversation about AI's inherent sexism, here's an email from cognitive psychologist and early AI theorist Roger Schank, arguing to Epstein that women can't be truly intelligent, because they care too much about what other people think.
I think it would be wise for folks to pause and consider that the breathless headlines about cognitive decline of Gen Z are based in eugenics. There are def impacts to the onslaught of tech in schools (and many valid critiques) but I would encourage folks to avoid making this your *core* argument

Today is #ReproShabbat hosted by @lilithmagazine.bsky.social and @ncjw.bsky.social - I was a co-champion of their uterus challah competition last year and decided to give it another go this year to reclaim the crown. Stiff competition this year though!!
Friends from Minneapolis reporting to me that things are at the point where folks are being hidden in other people's houses and we are in the "again" part of "never again" which the "never" was supposed to preclude
This part right here. AI chat bots are a bandaid to a MUCH larger structural issue. The NYT article out today discusses how AI chat bots for health are not more useful than just looking things up online when just given straight to patients. We cannot tech our way out of this problem.

Shabbat table set up
A late Shabbat Shalom! Itβs been a β¦ weird week. Iβve been pretty sick all week but also got great news on my book, Daniel received some good news, and we got a lot of great things rolling with our water governance project. Hoping a restful Shabbat will kick whatβs left in my system.

Canada and Denmark are not exceptional and what's happening the US can happen in these places too. My jaw dropped hearing the blatantly racist comments from the Minister of Immigration in Denmark back in the fall. Yes, cut ties with the US but also recognize that you are not immune to these risks.
Being an American living in Denmark and Canada during this administration is.... something. I'm glad this author calls out the Canadian government's active collaborations with this regime here but also, the call is coming from inside the house in Canada too

Excellent. So, my university doesn't allow live captions in Zoom meetings but does allow the AI companion to be turned on. We truly live in the bad place.
