Well this is fcking crazy. Work from @msbbirds.bsky.social and others found that Black Metaltail hummingbirds can drop their body temperature down to 3 °C (37 °F) during torpor. 🀯 Turns out birds aren't warm-blooded after all! royalsocietypublishing.org/rsbl/article...

I had the privilege of meeting Kirsty Duncan back in 2017. She was warm and sincere. She was our first and only πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Minister of Science who was a trained scientist. She consistently worked for positive meaningful change in all her government roles. Condolences to her family and friends.

My annual "DO IT!" encouragement post!

Selfishly, my time on CSEE council was the highlight of my PhD, it opened doors and opportunities that research alone did not. And I think we accomplished some good things for the society! πŸ§ͺ🌎

In at no. 7 of our most popular papers of the year, we have a #BiologyLetters study that discovered up to 6% of individuals in five wild #bird species naturally switch sex, with genetically male birds developing female traits and vice versa: doi.org/10.1098/rsbl...

I've been avoiding reading articles on the death of James Watson, co-discoverer of #DNA's structure.

That is, until I saw that @statnews.com published one by Sharon Begley, a renowned science writer who passed in 2021.

Yes, you read that right.

What will they be analyzing from this, and how? Are they proposing to replicate the expert, trained review cte’s work? If so, assuming they find different scored, how would they reasonably argue the validity / superiority of their findings? What are the metrics? Where is the capacity or skill? 2/2

Ethical and privacy issues (of which there are many) aside, I’d like to know who will and how they’re planning to analyze these data. 25 yrs of all graduate and faculty Tri Councils applications, funded or not, across the country, with the level of detail they’ve asked for is big data … 1/2
