Ah, how did you lose them? Totally reliable here, except when I moved one, ever so carefully, but still it shrank, then sulked for four years.

But it's something - at least an intent to deal with duplication. I import very low risk, bare root plants once a year. They are inspected in Holland, and I am charged for the phyto. Then I get charged again for inspection at the border and run the risk of product damage every time. It needs sorting

Am reading Adam Nicholson's 'The Mighty Dead - why Homer matters'. What a delight it is - essentially a long love letter to Homer and beautifully written too. Like many public schoolboys Nicholson was made to learn a little Greek which put him off Homer for years. Anyway, it's a joy.

One consequence of higher oil prices is that it will focus the mind on figuring out ways not to have to buy any ever again.

Almost definitely a great tit. We used to describe it as sounding like our old tumble dryer which squeaked on every turn. A jay is more of a single screech of alarm.

Yes - we have EVs too, which we only charge at night on low rate. The batteries make a vast difference in winter. Not to store our own solarPV - that doesn't stack up on its own. But buying 13kWhrs of electricity at 8p/unit each night really makes a dent in the bills.

More generally,,I think individual companies are going to be on this sharpish. Many will already have been contemplating a change and may have been waiting for the cost/benefit balance to shift a bit further. This should crystalise decision making...

Installed PV several years ago. Added batteries 4 years ago. Then a heat pump. Hardly use any peak rate electricity except mid Nov to mid Jan. No gas. Bills miniscule.... Definitely the way to go... Ed Milliband should be pulling every lever on this this summer.

Batteries? Quicker to deploy than heat pumps. Even if people use them to run 1:1 electric heaters it's better than gas....

Well - it's very much an interpretation. Missing characters, odd plot jumps, hyper-saturated, video game-like imagery. But the intensity of it, the obvious love of the book comes through. And for me, emotional, on the very few occasions they speak Emily BrontΓ«'s original words. They leap out.

Think of them as punctuation - pauses between the colour to give your eye a rest. Then, in autumn, when the flowering plants fade away, the grasses begin to shine and hold the border together through the winter.

I wasn't going to go and see "Wuthering Heights". But then it was the last screening date and I thought - what if it's great? And... in the real sense of the word, fabulous. Surreal, dream-like, urgent, fantastical. Gargantuan, grotesque, weird, wild, muddy, bloody, erotic, sensual. And I loved it.

In a way, you have to admire Leavitt. She can hold her head up high, nod, smile and respond instantly to almost any question with a feat of verbal gymnastics that keeps the MAGA base delighted. Quite the performance.

Exactly why I put solarPV and batteries on my house. Yes, partly for environmental reasons, but largely because I am almost completely insulated from energy/electricity price shocks, because I buy so little of it now.

Dear Shabana,
I notice today that you referred to me in your speech on immigration at the IPPR think tank.
You said: β€œA party leader should not be on the beaches of France encouraging people to
make a perilous crossing on small boats.”
I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised especially after the hateful Labour campaign in Gorton
and Denton, but this is just the latest in a string of lies peddled by a discredited Government
who intentionally fan the flames of racism and division.
When I went to Calais, I was not there to encourage people to travel to the UK. I was there
to see at first hand the suffering your Government and successive Governments have done
in demonising migrants in a pathetic bid to pander to the base instincts of Reform and the
flawed strategy of Morgan McSweeney.
As you will know, if you even bothered to research my visit instead of taking Reform talking
points, I was there to witness the brutality of families living in tents in freezing temperatures. I
filled water tanks and picked up litter.
What that visit did do is confirm my belief that if we are to smash the boat gangs and stop
the boats, we need to offer safer and managed routes for migrants to come to this country.
Showing compassion as a politician is not a crime. In fact, we need to see much more of it.
It reminded me of a young MP who in October 2015 spent three days in Lesbos helping
migrants fleeing war-torn Syria. She posted videos on X, talked about handing out water and
croissants to refugees and food parcels.
When she returned to the UK, she wrote a very moving piece in the New Statesman. She
said β€œwe have to work with our European partners and create new, safe, and legal routes for
refugees to get to Europe. We cannot abandon them to their fate, left as prey for smugglers
whilst risking death on the seas.”
She said β€œmaybe we can make ourselves feel better by saying no-one is making them get on
the boats. And again, the Home Secretary is not entirely wrong when …

Dear Shabana,

Let's clear some things up around migration and remember we're talking about people's lives.

A little reported fact is that the Iranian frigate destroyed 2000 miles from the combat zone was carrying ZERO AMMUNITION (a condition of the exercise it was invited to participate in).

The ship was, by any definition, defenceless.

Much like the 80+ sailors left to drown.

Infamy.
