Congrats Shaun!
Congrats Shaun!
Front page of the New Zealand Herald headline "Anger at science funding process"
The current state of the science system β ranging from purgatory to vandalism β has made the front page of today Herald with good articles by @jamiemorton.bsky.social. (1/n)
Plans to I believe :)
Thanks Mike! Might be in touch next week (but not about looking for work haha)
Thanks Delwyn, thatβs very kind :)
Cheers Charlie, hope you & yours are doing well down there
Thanks mate, means a lot
Thanks Tara :)
Iβve also been lucky enough to pick up a few gongs, and to be on the spot for some of the biggest news events of the last decade. Again, Iβm not quite sure of my next steps, but feel free to reach out in my private messages. My mobile number will stay the same :)
I leave on good terms and will very much miss my Herald colleagues, whoβve been there for my family through some bloody tough times. The job has taken me around the world, to climate summits, disaster zones, from the Australian outback to Antarcticaβs Dry Valleys. It's been a privilege. 3/
Itβs a little bit of a leap into the unknown, but itβs my hope to continue writing or working in the science, environment and climate spaces. Itβs also time for a change for me: next month marks 20 years with the company and up Iβm for a fresh chapter and challenge. 2/

Life update (yes, sorry, one of those). Amid the latest restructure at the Herald, Iβve opted to take voluntary redundancy (as first reported today by our own Media Insider!). I finish up on April 1 and have a lot of work to get through before then. 1/
Congrats on the AAAS science prize too btw Kate (this is also my first post on here in months)
My last piece for the year looks back at four numbers that highlight just how extreme 2023 was www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/cyclone-g...
Thanks for reading Ginny
Hey there Sam. No unfortunately, but you can find the piece in todayβs print edition. Much as Iβd like more people to be able read it, I guess paywall revenue helps keep me in a job
Thanks for speaking out Finn
Normally it would be exciting to be front page news but it's a pretty mixed feeling with today's story by Jamie Morton in the Herald. I was amongst a group of scientists who spoke to Jamie about the challenges facing the NZ science system. In short, we cannot go on like this
Hey Finn - yes thatβs the plan
Iβd been working on this deep dive about whatβs wrong with our science system for months before Massey moved to cut more than 60 roles last week. Whatever the new Govt decides to do, scientists have told me one thing: the sector canβt carry on like this. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/how-unive...
Thanks. Have got a deeper piece on all this bedlam in science coming out Monday
Not really the first story I wanted to post in here, but this happened today www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/more-than...
