This fellowship was a huge part of the reason I am continuing to do climate science, and it has supported so many incredible people. These effects on early-career researchers, who do some of the most impactful work, is going to have long-lasting implications for science and scientists.
As of today, all current NOAA Climate and Global Change postdoctoral fellows have been furloughed due to the Dept of Commerce not releasing the funding for the program. In addition no new Fellows were awarded this year. cpaess.ucar.edu/cgc
The Secretary of Commerce's new policy requiring his personal review of all NOAA contracts over $100,000 is directly harming American science. π§ͺ
How do I know? Because this morning, twelve of America's rising leaders in climate science (including myself) were furloughed.
Congratulations Lily!!!!! The department is extremely lucky to have you!!
Finally: Aminat is looking for postdoctoral positions in ice sheet modeling - if you are thinking of hiring soon and looking for an experienced climate physicist and model developer, please reach out!
A nerdy science 𧡠to give you a break from the news: the first lead-authored paper by @gtsciences.bsky.social PhD candidate Aminat Ambelorun about βThe Integrated Ice Sheet Response to Stochastic Calvingβ, now published in βͺthe @igsoc.bsky.socialβ¬ Journal of Glaciology doi.org/10.1017/jog....
screenshot from the NSF budget request to congress showing that the number of people involved in NSF activities will drop from 330,100 to 90,000.
The bottom line with the proposed cuts to NSF is to cut the number of working scientists and disappear opportunities to train new scientists.
This is a PROPOSED budget to Congress. Call your reps.
Spread the word.
