Alysa Liu telling 60 Minutes “I love struggling, it makes me feel alive” is a legit revolutionary statement from a Bay Area native in a time when copious amounts of time and resources are being put toward convincing us to opt out of experiencing struggle, friction and self-actualization

Measuring Growth in Mathematical Reasoning: What Mia’s Thinking Reveals Mia* is a fourth grader who participates in a small-group intervention with me that focuses on multiplication. She is enthusiastic and playful — curling the dot in the i in her name into a he…

Inspired by @mburnsmath.bsky.social's session, Session 3's speaker @jennalaib.bsky.social wrote this. "To assess learning & development, I need to look more closely at how Mia reasoned thru the tasks, not just how many ?s she answered correctly. This is what I love most about interview assessments."

The entire business model of R1 public universities rests on 4 revenue sources:

1. Federal grants
2. Private gifts/endowments
3. Tuition (esp. from foreign students)
4. State $

For decades, 📈 in 1-3 offset a secular 📉 in 4. Now, 1 & 3 are being decimated & 4 ain't coming back. The math is clear.

🤖 Prominent AI scientists call for a halt to the “uncritical adoption of AI technologies in academia” in an open letter.

The authors of the position paper oppose… insist that “university leaders and administrators must act to help us collectively turn back the tide of garbage software” (sic).

Do universities realize the optics of a “free speech week” (celebrated with required 1st amendment training) when they have recently been firing faculty for what they say on their own time? Asking for a friend.

I love Graham Fletcher's ability to break down topics like the progression of how students learn about fractions in such an intuitive way. Watch and share his video with your teacher friends.

My job as a professor is not to create a serviceable worker. My job is to help foster thoughtful citizens or community members.

If that sounds fanciful it’s bc corporate interests have spent decades framing how we talk about education so they don’t take the heat for immiserating labor conditions.

Resisting School AI Mania Help Sheet (2).pdf

The four arguments tackled:

Schools need to prepare students for the jobs of the future.

AI is a tool, just like a calculator.

AI won’t replace teachers, but it will save them time and improve their effectiveness.

Students are already using AI, so we have to teach them ethical use.

Re-reading “Never say anything a kid can say,” gold from the early 2000s. A fave quote: lecture is “the transfer of info from the notes of the lecturer to the notes of the student without passing through the minds of either.” hybridalgebra.pbworks.com/f/Never+Say+...

Here's the thing about AI, LLMs, and all forms that are generating "creative work": they are not creative. They are stolen, devoid of humanity, and the exact opposite of what writing, music, art. And at this exact second, their existence is sapping the will of your favorite artists.

The value of higher ed in the U.S. has been perpetually under debate since its inception — Was it to maintain public order via Christianity? Teach people to read? Run a new country? All of the above? The debate itself is the point — the contested question of what education is for. Not a bad thing.

Lots of folks talk about using AI to brainstorm, organize thoughts, plan, and/or revise and edit, but that’s where the magic of writing and creating happens. Even if a student isn’t plagiarizing, how much of their thinking is changed and shaped by machines?

But best part was the student who noticed surface area was 6*(area of square) and volume was (area of square)*height. Based on this, she explained that SA would be larger for cubes w/ sides less than 6, equal at 6, and V larger than SA with sides more than 6.

Most groups immediately checked small cases and determined it was never true. After prompting to check larger cases, they revised answer to sometimes.

Explored a great task in my Elem. Ed math course yesterday: The surface area of a cube is (always/sometimes/never) less than its volume. Students had previously determined that to minimize surface area (or perimeter), the dimensions should be as close to a cube (or square) as possible.

I do this in my elementary math content course! Great way to make connections between expressions and diagrams and understand what each number represents.

Today is #WorldTBDay! With the recent setbacks in the fight against TB, it's easy to forget the progress we've made as well, so we're here to remind you: hard work in community with others creates change and empowers progress. Let's celebrate these wins!

If we really care about helping young people be "good at math", then that means caring about more than correct answers. We have to care about where they are heading next, and that means caring about the unintended consequences of what we tell them now.

Take Action For Foreign Aid!
Take Action For Foreign Aid! YouTube video by Partners In Health

In just 48 hours, decades of global health progress have been ignored and put at risk.

The U.S. terminated 90% of USAID foreign aid contracts—including lifesaving services once considered safe from the freeze.

Let’s talk about why this matters and how we can fight back: youtube.com/shorts/U0mLg...

Conceptually, area is the number of 1 cm by 1 cm squares that fit inside a 2D (flat) object. So, saying the area is 2 square cm reinforces that idea (counting squares). As others have said, some students hear 2 cm squared and think it’s saying (2cm x 2cm).
