Of course, this was not the plan. The plan was to co-opt the beloved Kennedy Center, turning it into a venue for artists to pay homage to the king, celebrating him as a great man. After all the artists told him to get fucked, he decided to destroy it.

Fascism grows in power. Trump’s knockoff Gestapo is kidnapping and murdering people in public. The US is running Concentration Camps (just like Germany using national borders to get away with it). The next election is not guaranteed. Don’t “wait and see.” Fascism only gets more violent with time.
“Premature anti-fascism” was bullshit in the 1950s. It’s still bullshit now. No one was confused. The evidence was always there. THE FASCISTS PUBLICLY BRAGGED ABOUT THEIR INTENTIONS. Stop the victim blaming, stop ignoring historical data, and fight back before the last of the Constitution is burned.
Calling those that led the resistance from the beginning “premature” (in unsurprisingly sexist language) is an attempt to dodge consequences by pretending those who named the truth of what was happening were somehow delusional, despite also admitting they were entirely correct. It’s a bad cover-up.
There were people who admitted the reality MAGA shouted from the rooftops, and there were those who pretended not to hear is because they saw a chance to benefit and/or indulge their bigotry. Those who dismissed the call to fight then - before the threat was in power - are culpable for fascism now.
Trump and his cronies never lied about their goals. Everything else, definitely. But not their desire for absolute power and oppression of all they consider beneath them. They also never hid their fascist ideology. Naming the threat from the first was not “hysteria.” It was stating a fact.
Anyone selling myths of “premature antifascism” - usually the same men arguing that all men must be treated as safe by women until the rapists and murderers reveal themselves, and then blaming the victims for not “preventing” the violence - is just selling fascism. Fascism lite is still fascism.
There is no such thing as premature resistance to fascism. There is active resistance and there are quislings ready to sell out the rest of us because they see personal benefit in “compromise” right up until the fascists gain enough power to stop pretending to compromise. There is zero excuse.
Now that fascism has won we are being gaslighted with claims of “premature antifascism,” just like the hard left was in the 1950s when American conservatives wanted to pretend that their support for fascism in 1940 was reasonable, and the horrors the Nazis built were impossible to predict.
This comment is so infuriating in how utterly and willfully it misses the point. The “hysterical pussy hats” were not “premature.” THAT WAS WHEN FASCISM COULD BE PREVENTED. Instead misogynistic dismissal of the clear and obvious threat was so much easier and more profitable.
Everyone else - keep fighting. Every day. Because we are now almost 25 years into horror because too many people found hate easier than grief. It Can’t - it MUST NOT - be allowed to continue. Fascism has one end point if left to its own devices, and no one needs another World War.
Look in a mirror or go to your children and say “I am a Nazi.” If that makes you angry or ashamed, then you know you are on the wrong side of everything. If you are proud, know eventually history will show you as you really are, and your descendants will feel the shame that you lack.
Anyone who still thinks it will be fine because the US will always be a functional democracy because magic, or that the only victims will be people that they consider expendable, or that fascism will benefit them personally and all the victims as nothing compared to that - it is past time to stop.
And targeting everyone similar to a few murderers because sitting with trauma is hard. And once that choice is made, where we are now is the end point. Continuing down the same path is easier than admitting fault for confusing vengeance and justice, and stopping the violence.
The US was built on religious extremism and tax evasion. The “paranoid style” of reactionary hatred has always been here and active. And *popular*. It was always at least partially in power. Americans forgot to keep fighting it, choosing hate because it was easy to destroy everyone similar to…
Fascism is in power, but it can still be resisted, still be overthrown. Step one is admitting the truth and not pretending it’s safe. It Can’t Happen Here was an imperative, not a statement of magical immunity. It’s absurd how many think otherwise. Extremism was always here - and must be fought.
Worse are the ones who didn’t, but chose to accept the lies and the hate because it felt good in the moment, and resisting the mob is hard. Worse are the ones who saw the truth but chose to sell the lie for profit and fame, and all the ones who thought they wouldn’t pay the price and didn’t care.
