Topographic map of the Camarones River basin, annotated with the locations of hunting traps (chacus), settlements and vegetation.

In northern Chile's Western Valleys, GIS helped discover 76 hunting traps and hundreds of settlements, indicating hunting and foraging remained major aspects of life long after we believed people had fully transitioned to agropastoralist farming 5/6

@indyfromspace.bsky.social Thanks for sharing such thoughtful comments on my paper. I completely agree, many of us have been told at some point that satellites aren’t that useful for archaeology, or worse, that we ‘only make pretty maps with satellite imagery’. But oh well 😂

NEW Satellite imagery reveals 76 hunting traps and 100s of undiscovered settlements in the Andean highlands, indicating hunting and foraging were still major aspects of life long after researchers believed people transitioned to agropastoralist farming.

Counting rings reveals Sycamore Gap tree age range There has been a lack of clarity over the age of the Hadrian's Wall tree which was illegally felled.

Great to see coverage of how @dhlabexeter.bsky.social is helping Historic England with accurately dating the felled Sycamore Gap tree. More on this work at @exeter.ac.uk soon...
