I could be wrong but you should be able to connect any node to the material output to preview what that particular node is going to do. You can shift+ctrl+ left click any node to preview it.

The thing I like about art is how deliberate it is. I love looking at textures in video games and following the thought process that led to someone deciding why something looks the way it does. Why does the room look the way it does? The wall? The character?
