I arrived at the conclusion that (1) there's a lot of interesting stuff about interactions and (2) the figure I was looking for does not exist.

If you're looking for academic work on this (including a couples treatment approach) then Dan O'Leary, Steve Beach, & Mark Whisman have a good bit on this, though a lot of it was done awhile back
