I don’t think you can buy the song “I Hate The Bloody Queen” by The Queen Haters but I was once introduced to the punk guitarist who plays the solo Eugene Levy is miming in that sketch. Candy and O’Hara in particular had connections to Toronto’s cool music scene in the eighties

It was filmed 8 years ago and is still officially “postponed” not officially cancelled, I was there and hope it eventually sees the light of day, I’ve heard every excuse from technical problems to rights issues to Scorsese’s schedule as the reason why not. O’Hara’s death reminds us they should hurry

On the SCTV where a writers strike means they show CBC programming there is a “Hinterland Who’s Who” parody commercial where there is no joke, they just do a straightfaced ad read about a woodchuck exactly like the real ones. Americans would be like “huh? I don’t get it”, Canadians would be howling

Lola Heatherton alleged that indeed Bobby “How Was I?” Bittman was one of the men she slept with at SCTV, along with Guy Caballero and Johnny LaRue, she revealed this on her live comeback special. This was before she finally found love with the choreographer Juul Haalmeyer in 1982

I’ll name one nobody names: they did a 10 minute parody of the sixties melodrama The Oscar called The Nobel which was a parody on a granular level of one of the worst movies ever made (complimentary). The important thing about SCTV’s appeal is that they were trying to make EACH OTHER laugh

NGL question: “Given the rumor that certain cast members rejected the idea of Jim Carrey joining as a potential new cast member during the Cinemax season, do you think the show could have carried on with a rotating cast a la SNL?”
I’m glad we got that final Cinemax season even if it’s not as good, but you could see by that point that the end was nigh, the pressure was on the remaining cast to do other things, the new cast weren’t as equipped. SCTV was critically acclaimed /well respected but the ratings were never there.
Mrs Faldo was great but you can’t beat Floyd Robertson / Count Floyd and his multi-season struggles with alcoholism and hating Earl with every fiber of his being
