Richard has spent the past few weeks canvassing colleagues at the UN about what they expect from the new US administration.

He lays out a few ideas, and more uncertainties, in this new article for @justsecurity.org

Fresh Thinking about Peace Operations at the UN | Crisis Group With blue-helmet deployments shrinking, and facing political and financial headwinds, it may seem that the heyday of multilateral peacekeeping is over. But at UN headquarters in New York, the discussions about the subject are not quite so fatalistic.

While there is a lot of talk about a "crisis of peacekeeping" @fortid1.bsky.social and I argue @crisisgroup.org that the debate about the future of UN peace ops is starting to get a little more positive and constructive.

A reason not to give up on UN missions is the difficulty of sustaining credible alternatives. But says @fortid1.bsky.social @richardgowan1.bsky.social UN members should bear in mind that Trump's White Hse is almost certain to ask hard questions about their value.

In our latest for @crisisgroup.org, @richardgowan1.bsky.social and I take stock of recent peacekeeping debates at the UN.

We argue that the time is ripe for fresh thinking about the future of UN missions.

The biggest change is, of course, the fact that Chinaβ€”the 2nd largest assessed contributorβ€”is now responsible for over 20% under both scales. The fact that the two largest contributors do not pay assessments on time is one of the main factors driving the ongoing liquidity crisis at the UN. [2/3]

Big vote in UNSC tomorrow to determine the fate of @ATMIS_Somalia / #AUSSOM

Rapid reaction: 2719 closer to reality but not a done deal.

Next decision point in May β€˜25 with different US leadership at the table.

Good to see African/Euro synergies.

AU, UN ops still in limbo.

Can the Hizbollah-Israel Ceasefire Hold? | Crisis Group Lebanon and Israel have reached an agreement to end the Hizbollah-Israel fighting that began on 8 October 2023. In this Q&A, Crisis Group experts Heiko Wimmen, David Wood and Mairav Zonszein examine the truce’s terms and weigh the chances that the parties will honour them.

Israel and Lebanon (meaning Hezbollah) agreed to a ceasefire a week ago. How is it faring? UNIFIL reports already 100 Israeli violations. Yet by and large the ceasefire seems to be holding. What can we expect? My @crisisgroup.org colleagues offer their views. www.crisisgroup.org/middle-east-...

Does America Still Need Egypt? When War Broke Out in Gaza, Biden Needed Sisiβ€”But Trump’s Calculus Might Differ

I have a new essay @foreignaffairs.com on US-Egypt relations after a year plus of regional war and intensive diplomatic collaboration to end the fighting in Gaza. Alignment extends beyond the war, but accepting status quo in Egypt carries longer term risks.

One underrated aspect of this question is that Somali officials will spend the next two years in the Security Council working alongside U.S. counterparts on a daily basis.

This won't be determinative, but it's fair to assume that these two govs will interact a lot more than in years past.

1) on doctrine, @shakirov2036.bsky.social's thread of 19 Nov does a great side-by-side of what's changed. I won't recreate it. I'll just highlight what I think matters most
