The biggest change is, of course, the fact that Chinaβthe 2nd largest assessed contributorβis now responsible for over 20% under both scales. The fact that the two largest contributors do not pay assessments on time is one of the main factors driving the ongoing liquidity crisis at the UN. [2/3]

Big vote in UNSC tomorrow to determine the fate of @ATMIS_Somalia / #AUSSOM
Rapid reaction: 2719 closer to reality but not a done deal.
Next decision point in May β25 with different US leadership at the table.
Good to see African/Euro synergies.
AU, UN ops still in limbo.

THREAD π§΅: The ceasefire in Lebanon and the current turmoil in Syria has prompted a recalibration of priorities among Iraqi resistance groups. Before, their attacks on Israel kept the government busy trying to avert potential Israeli strikes on Iraq. 1/9

Does America Still Need Egypt?
When War Broke Out in Gaza, Biden Needed SisiβBut Trumpβs Calculus Might Differ
I have a new essay @foreignaffairs.com on US-Egypt relations after a year plus of regional war and intensive diplomatic collaboration to end the fighting in Gaza. Alignment extends beyond the war, but accepting status quo in Egypt carries longer term risks.

One underrated aspect of this question is that Somali officials will spend the next two years in the Security Council working alongside U.S. counterparts on a daily basis.
This won't be determinative, but it's fair to assume that these two govs will interact a lot more than in years past.

Comfort Ero offers three lessons for peacemaking in an unstable world
Global conflict is rising, but do not give up on peacemaking, argues Comfort Ero, president of International Crisis Group in The World Ahead 2025
βIt is politically easier to make the case for funding missiles than mediators.β
Our President and CEO @comfortero.bsky.social argues that while global conflict is rising, peacemaking is still vital in @economist.com.

1) on doctrine, @shakirov2036.bsky.social's thread of 19 Nov does a great side-by-side of what's changed. I won't recreate it. I'll just highlight what I think matters most

Cop29: Climate finance deal agreed but talks remain deeply divided β as it happened
The deal was met with long applause, cheering, whistling and embraces but few are happy with it
Panama, a newly elected member of the UNSC for 2025-26, with a scathing assessment of COP29:
βI think 1.5C was at the intensive care unit and it feels like that bed just broke and it fell on the floor.β
