Trump told reporters at the White House that the protesters in Los Angeles “are insurrectionists.” That’s false. January 6 was an insurrection, this is a protest. But by using that language, he may be laying the groundwork to invoke the 1807 Insurrection Act.
He also claimed the city would have been “obliterated” without the National Guard. That’s utterly absurd. The Guard did nothing during yesterday’s protests, they stood outside the federal building where ICE detainees were being held.
From Justice Brandeis's famous concurrence in on such case, Whitney v. CA (1927): "Fear of serious injury cannot alone justify suppression of free speech and assembly. Men feared witches and burnt women. It is the function of speech to free men from the bondage of irrational fears."
Never stop saying this.
He even said he would arrest Governor Newsom, an outright authoritarian statement. Trump is trying to manufacture chaos and crisis on the ground for his own political ends.
OF COURSE, Trump's deployment of National Guard troops is a tragic foreshadowing of what we can expect next, and it is a test run by the Trump administration to push the legal limits on martial law.
