This is vile.
We're being governed by 11 year olds hopped up on energy drinks.
You know who never has to tell you they're smart? Actual smart people.
Happy Pub Day to the remarkable @ginphillips.bsky.social, whose books you definitely should be reading and whose ideas for donut hole waterfalls should be giving you hope for the future of humanity.
I've just invoiced for payment on my 50th column for Lit Hub. I've basically written enough for a whole book whose title could be something like The Books Are Still Good But the Industry Is Bonkers.
Here's some of my stuff: lithub.com/author/maris...
She's right. No notes.
when we were kids, my brothers and i were on the bus with my mam and we had a family day ticket (we'd been at the sea) and as we got off at the bus stop, my mam handed the ticket to a woman laden with three kids and bags of shopping and i'll never forget the look of absolute joy on the woman's face

It is bleak, isn't it?
A video still from Save the Bay. The transcript reads "Hey everybody it's Chris Dodge your Narragansett Baykeeper from Save the Bay." He is wearing a "Save the Bay"hoodie and holding a mic, clipped to a clam shell.
So this whole video from Save the Bay about the hazards of dumping snow directly into Narragansett Bay is worthwhile. But I need to highlight specifically: he clipped the mic to a clam shell!
Off-the-charts levels of Rhode Island excellence.

A minor league hockey team had a wiener dog race. Zero thoughts, just vibes and absolute chaos. A thing of beauty
Had the good fortune to talk a bit about Oldster Magazine with Kasia Pilat at The New York Times.

one of the neat things about submitting to the fancier lit mags is that by the time they send you a rejection all the cells in your body have been replaced with newer cells, they're not rejecting you but as past version of yourself, how quaint
A concept of a threat...
"According to theβ¦annual Harris Poll, for the 1st time, a majority of Americans believe billionaires are a threat to democracy. A remarkable 71% believe there should be a wealth tax. A majority believe there should be a cap on how much wealth a person can accumulate." www.nytimes.com/2025/12/14/o...
Are you paying attention yet?
"The heavy bombing will continue to achieve our goal of peace" has strong "the beatings will continue until morale improves" vibes.

The Pentagon had demanded the AI company loosen ethical guidelines on its systems or face severe consequences.
This sentence in The Guardian says a lot about where we are as a country.
I regret to inform you that the Secretary of Defense is an idiot
Do you like romantasy? Of course you do, according to nearly every woman and half the men in my life. My friend @jeannerenee.bsky.social just put out a new book you should read and give to all the women and half the men in your life. (Her last book, too.)

my uncle runs a place in Anchorage that serves fish and chips, and he named the half portion the "Texas size" which is just an incredible troll

Chapter 1 of Moby Dick, page 1 The phrase βCall me Ishmaelβ, the first sentence of the book, is highlighted in blue, with careful highlighting on the very big C at the start. Above this, written in ballpoint pen βHis nameβ
