You are mistaken, we do not respond to legal requests from anywhere other than the Swiss authorities.

It is unlikely that one could build a business through ignoring the laws of the jurisdiction that it is in. The mail provider you're moving to included.

Yes, across different pages on our site such as the payment options page and, crucially, the privacy policy, we have the same info.

06.03.2026 18:20 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Credit card info is kept as long as it is on your account. The cash thing here is sidestepping a digital transfer that is linked to personal info, for a bank transfer we still need to know your bank, that info is sent to us.

Yes, as we put at the end of this statement about that piece.

More than most, cooking Ethiopian food this evening though so there's always a light at the end.

I'm sure it'll be clearer when I read it but, double blind armadillo, woof.

Okay to be fair this is a good piece of lateral thinking which I didn't have the brain cells for after a day of talking to people about this story. Thanks.

Payment options | Proton Find out which payment methods and currencies you can use for your paid Proton subscription. How to pay with card, PayPal, Google Pay, Bitcoin, cash, bank transfer.

Yes you can send money by mail: proton.me/support/paym...

I can't speak to your specific situation.

This has been the long statement posted where character constraints aren't an issue.

As per this, you can already pay in ways which mitigate that danger.

Suggesting alternative companies which also will operate under state laws with MLATs is unlikely to be helpful to you.

And on the political point, it's important to underline that this request was in 2024.

06.03.2026 17:45 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Yes it's very much not comparable.

Apple is a US company in the United States, whereas we are a Swiss company in Switzerland.

Swiss authorities determined that a pretty high legal threshold was met and so we handed over what limited data we had.

Cash & crypto can both be used to avoid this.

Is Proton leaving Switzerland? "Legal uncertainty" of proposed surveillance laws is pushing them to make several changes Several of Proton's products could be headed elsewhere in Europe in the wake of proposed surveillance laws

We are aware of if and when people want to change the laws in Switzerland, and we have actions prepared if they do.

We will only disclose the limited user data we possess if we are legally obligated to do so by a binding request coming from the competent Swiss authorities.

There isn't really a way around complying with laws in your jurisdiction if you want to exist as a business.

Cash in an envelope or crypto for those who want to get max anonymity.

There are other commenters in this thread who are pointing out the same issue with the headline so it's clearly not just something confined to us.

Further to this we categorically do not work with anyone outside of πŸ‡¨πŸ‡ "unless we are legally obligated to do so by a binding request coming from the competent Swiss authorities." (Privacy Policy)

And yes it is the line that you've cited here which is what the comment refers to.

Under Swiss Law a VPN is more protected from requests, which is why our transparency page for VPN shows that every legal request is denied.

Proton_Team's comment on "Proton Mail Helped FBI Unmask Anonymous β€˜Stop Cop City’ Protester" Explore this conversation and more from the ProtonMail community

It's 2000+ characters I don't think it's going to be able to facilitate an accurate ALT.

It's probably better to just visit the post on Reddit if you are so inclined: www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail...

And the request was Swiss. The contention here is very much with wording.

We don't reply to the FBI. We will only disclose the limited user data we possess if we are legally obligated to do so by a binding request coming from the competent Swiss authorities.

The full response as posted on Reddit is useful here.

Conversely, you have to question the commitment to privacy of a company that is unwilling to follow laws to the level where they can avoid being shutdown.

We will only disclose the limited user data we possess if we are legally obligated to do so by a binding request coming from the competent Swiss authorities. This has been in our privacy policy for yonks, the policy that will have been offered up when you signed up.
