I used to make websites (Blogger, JPG Mag, Fray). I wrote the book “Design for Community.” Now I grow flowers and keep animals at milkbarn.farm. Replies sometimes limited to followers. It's not you, it's me.
One of my Platner takes is he didn’t organically emerge from any movement or organization. He’s just an individual who has “beliefs” or whatever. He’s another brand amongst brands. If elected, capital won’t even have to pry him from any working class movement that could hold him to account

Vestiges of this thinking remain in the foundation of Bluesky like toxic waste, still making the people who live here sick years after Jack left the building.
People like Jack want a system like email - an open protocol that anyone can operate with no assumption of community management duties - but they ALSO want to OWN it and make money from it and make it a public town square - all things that an open protocol like email isn’t and can’t be.

Jack liked the bsky idea because he thought by turning Twitter into a protocol he would be excused from having to do the messy community work that’s the actual hard part of social media - an ethos that almost destroyed bsky in the beginning and still lies at the root of all their bad decisions.

This is a chilling crime. A shame on our country. The Iranian ship was unarmed. The US knew this. The sailors were murdered by our navy, and the survivors were left to die at sea.

Our first duty is to each other. Not to blame or diagnose or psychoanalyze, but caretake, nurture, and empathize.
But the billionaires and politicians who rule us and pervert our society deserve no such care. They deserve our blame, our ire, our justice.
We must maintain this distinction.
I’m not saying there’s nothing wrong with us, Lord knows there’s something wrong with everything right now. I’m just sick of watching the people in power bathe in their worst instincts while we at the bottom blame each other and try to figure out what’s wrong with us.
It is impossible to diagnose and treat what is wrong with us without starting at the top, and those people are very much not us.
We start with them.
Be deeply skeptical of any argument that blames average people instead of the systems that entrap them and the leaders who fail them.
The assholes in charge want us to blame each other so we don’t come after them. Don’t help them.

I just said “prediction marketing” when I meant to say “prediction market” but I think the mistake tells the bigger truth: these sites are self-marketing endeavors, not markets.
Hell, they don’t even predict anything, except for you losing your money.
Hang in there. It’s a rough time. I honestly couldn’t imagine doing design work in this climate, but I do miss it sometimes. Doing design is, at its core, about taking care of people. And we need that more than ever.
