In 1852, Frederick Douglass gave a speech to an antislavery society in Rochester, NY, commonly known as "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?"
Making good on the promise of this meme: photos.app.goo.gl/mmQHvBeu62uS...
More from the forthcoming "Identifying Big Wood Type" zine. + bc letterpress should be antifascist, sharing some ways to help our communities rn: in MN (www.standwithminnesota.com), Midwest (www.mibfc.org), Maine (www.mainesolidarity.org); & the Black Zine Fair (gogetfunding.com/black-zine-f...)
The press is at @wolfproofpress.com; I'll be sharing more things here for a while, then less to not annoy folks not interested; but @wolfproofpress.com will always have info about what new prints are available in the store, mutual aid fundraising when it happens, etc.
Will open items for purchasing soon (still figuring out shipping for different sizes of print). There's also an option to donate toward buying a real home printing press (should you wish): store.wolfproofpress.com/product/dona...
I don't have items set as buyable quite yet, but I did get my letterpress print store (store.wolfproofpress.com) & press (wolfproofpress.com) sites open! Trying to raise $ to buy a home press (which will allow more free & mutual-aid-fundraising printing, including instead of doomscrolling at 3am...)
The sheep keep getting larger
Photo of a pile of lasercut letterpress materials: maple wood cut to leave a raised heavily bewooled sheep; a pile of acrylic letters and squares with those letters' shapes cut away, in neon translucent colors; and a dotted-line squiggly arrow cut raised from blue acrylic
Cyberwave grid and sun design lasercut into blue acrylic
Photo (digitally reflected for readability) of the letters "Z I N E S !" cut out from neon translucent acrylic, laid on an open notebook
Lasercutting for letterpress (again) #DHmakes
the problem with finishing the "Identifying Big Wood Type" zine is not wanting to stop adding pages to the zine
ππ
Dayglo for a gloomy day (on the sunset block I recently lasercut)
Recent letterpress lasercutting pt 2: absolute unit of a sheep ππ«Έ πΊβ¨ from historical photo to bamboo wood printing block. 2nd photo is halfway through the 2nd laser pass, so you see the top half that's already gotten 2 laser passes is darker (harder to see: it's also now in deeper relief)
Photo (digitally flipped for readability) of letterpress printing blocks lasercut into clear acrylic, alongside piles of cut mounts to bring them near typehigh. One says "GLITCH" in a glitchy digital font; another says "VIBRANT" in an italic font that looks like what comic books use for forceful sound effects; 3 are computer keyboard keys (one labeled "SHIFT" and two blank)
Photo of a letterpress printing block lasercut into clear gray acrylic, showing the leaf-packed edge of a sliced cabbage repeated three times to form a horizontal border
Photo of a letterpress printing block lasercut into clear frosted acrylic, showing a partial circle divided into horizontal bars of decreasing size (for printing a cyberwave style sun)
Wolfproof Press graphic showing a roundly over-wooled sheep in front of a orange-hot pink gradient barred sun circle; in the farther background are various rainbow tiger and cheetah 90s patterns. Neon green-blue text says "wolfproof press friendly prints for feral people // coming soon"
Recent letterpress lasercutting pt 1: glitchy-fonted "glitch"; "vibrant"'s font is named Bangers??; PC keyboard shift key + blank versions I can label as I wish (1 w/space for a printers fist finger π to be pressing it). Cabbage-texture border, from photo. Cyberwave sun from my WolfProof Press logo:
Photo of a table spread with many different colorful letterpress prints, including words that pop out like "wood type", "Moby Dick", "organizable", and "letterpress"
Got to share some of my recent letterpress with @uvalibrary.bsky.social digital humanities colleagues yesterday:
I regret(?) to share that a friend just pointed out what I thought was part of Historical Whale Friend's ventral fin is, in fact, likely a wavy penis
π³οΈββ§οΈπ always
Should be up at wolfproofpress.com's print store soonish (almost ready to open! just gotta weigh prints for finicky shipping calculations...).
1st print using an actual cabbage. Next one will use all the antifascist veggie puns, arranged around the cabbage print like layers of leaves (puns are inherently antifascist) #DHmakes
Speed typesettings! Working toward a goal of having printed w/every typefamily in the printshop, but the 1960s-ish calligraphic wood type was very hard to read backwards for m/n/u/w
Some quick DHy prints for @mkirschenbaum.bsky.social using "The March of the Intellect" automaton I lasercut. "What we talk about when we talk about AI". "textpocalypse, now :(". "disentangle the signifier, entangle the social & material of AI" (from Matt's bsky.app/profile/mkir...) #DHmakes
Almost done with this lil zine (from bsky.app/profile/wolf...)
ty! π
Print of Emily Dickinson quote and homage centering "hope is a thing with wings" and including a block of a paper crane designed and manufactured by the printer
4/4: Just beautiful. No jokes.
Selfie of sober realization in front of Warde remix print in which I contemplate my own proclivity get off on statement printing about text technologies
3/4: this revision/remix of Beatrice Warde's ode is an irreverent take(down) AND a celebration of printing in its own right and @ryancordell.org explains it better in his own appreciation post about @literaturegeek.bsky.social 's moves on this print, so go check that out!
Antifacist Bookmakers & Binders broadside rocking puns on the craft that encourage collectivity and community caretaking, such as the term Gathering and so on....I'm pointing to the print with a bone folder because I'm all in in these puns AND I am an ego maniac
2/4: With so many verbal and visual puns on bookbinding loaded into this print, it made sense to honor the work by incorporating some germane prop humor into this selfie.
Moby Dick print hanging out on my basement/print shop air duct. Moby is saying Hi! and is sporting his member and that goes unacknowledged far too often on Bluesky!
A mostly irreverent appreciation thread about @literaturegeek.bsky.social 's fun and fabulous prints:
1/4: Just in case you are on megalomaniacal quest to kill a great fish, you might try looking for it in my duct work, because that's where he lives now.
#DHmakes because you can never trust that whale. Shows up in the most unexpected spots. π³
The cabbage prints are very cool but am holding photos as motivation to finish getting my print store online π€π₯¬π¨ Meanwhile here is traditional letterpress blocking... for typehigh red cabbage #DHmakes
