MONSTROUS MUSINGS
The Giant Conspiracy Happening Against YOU
By Phil Nobile Jr.
I work with a pretty cool and diverse spectrum of employers, staffers and freelancers. Folks of different genders, sexuality, races, backgrounds. I think we're all pretty aligned ethically, morally, and where human rights are concerned, but when it comes to movies, opinions, and pop culture tastes and takes, we're all over the place.
And that's great. Sure, I will shake my head at a co-worker's opinion on a movie from time to time. We might even debate our differing positions. It's fun! But I'm becoming increasingly aware that this kind of civil, respectful coexistence is giving way to a troubling, growing line of thinking I see in the world - and, more and more, in horror: "If you disagree with me, something is up." It's not even "you're wrong"; it's
"you're only pretending to have a different opinion than mine, which is the correct opinion."

sometimes people ask critics "what is the worst thing you've seen recently" and they expect you to name something bonkers, but in most cases the real soul-suckers are the half-hearted mediocrities. i will always be more excited by a swing-for-the-fences misfire, even if i hate it

Whatever You Think of "Wuthering Heights," We Need More Filmmakers Like Emerald Fennell A look at the career of Emerald Fennell, and the responses to her three films to date.

"Not everything she tries works, but every choice is made with the kind of full-throated commitment to her vision that too many filmmakers lack." yes @lacymb.bsky.social on Emerald Fennell

I'm so glad she wrote this. The portrayal of her in this series is, to me, indefensible. She deserves an apology from the filmmakers and FX.

And if you hear yourself saying you portrayed a real person (who's alive!) in a particular way to manipulate your audience, please go improve.

Opinion | Daryl Hannah: How Can β€˜Love Story’ Get Away With This?

"I have never used cocaine in my life... I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone’s private memorial... It’s appalling to me that I even have to defend myself against a television show." Justice for Daryl Hannah!

β€˜Vladimir’ Review: Rachel Weisz and Leo Woodall Heat Up Netflix’s Boldly Prickly, Fascinatingly Slippery Deconstruction of Desire Julia May Jonas adapts her own acclaimed novel about a married English professor who develops an all-consuming crush on a younger colleague.

vladimir is a show about how some women would rather project all of their deepest needs and fears and regrets and insecurities onto Leo Woodall than go to therapy

it took me until maybe S1E6 to get really into it, so maybe it'll grow on you. or maybe it won't and that's ok too! life's too short to force yourself through a show you're not enjoying

Billions (2016-2023): "rich people! so crazy and terrible but also smart and kinda cool am i right"

Succession (2018-2023): "rich people! so crazy and terrible and stupid and uncool but aren't they just so sad"

Industry (2020-): "… and in conclusion, that's how you get a Ghislaine Maxwell"

I know journalism is a rapidly deteriorating industry, but it also feels like fighting a losing battle when folks on here are mostly sharing articles to dunk on them, rather than solid pieces from journos and critics out here trying our best every day to stay working and writing

is life just a series of days where you're tired in the afternoon and wide awake at night, running behind on weekly deadlines, and seeing pants get slim and big and then slim again over the years until you die?
