I reached out to Media Do's Investor Relations department, and have received some useful clarifications regarding the function of their in-house MDTS software. I am now much more confident in their acquisition of Seven Seas Entertainment.

If you ever want to read a paper for free and can't find it otherwise, email the lead author and politely ask for a copy. You will not be bothering the person. You will in fact make their whole entire day. I have had scientists get so excited I asked they sent me everything they ever published.

I was at a gathering recently and was asked what I thought about the efficiency of translating vs working with/checking MTL, and I asked them if they would rather do homework they know how to do or go over someone else's homework, and they got it right away.

to be clear, doing check passes on other people's TLs is quite common, and usually people take no issue with it; it's just when the source is really bad (whether because it's by a machine or an unskilled human) that it ends up being more work than starting over

I've had translators refuse to do check/cleanup passes on sufficiently bad *human* translations in favor of starting over from scratch, even bsky.app/profile/jent...

Every professional translator I know has the same position on this and can easily explain the reasons for it when asked. The fact that executives don't even bother to ask and force translators to work on AI/MTL slop regardless makes it clear where their priorities lie: money trumps quality.

The whole SGGG translation debacle just brings up yet again, why in God's name are we using AI to automate the fun, creative things in life? Translating a beloved game is a joy, an honour, a learning experience, a hugely rewarding personal challenge. Let robots do the dishes, this is the good stuff!

It’s not that expensive to get a good localization of a manga volume.

Don’t let them forget that.

The actual translation part of translating a volume of manga generally takes about a week or so and costs about a grand and change. Just some numbers it might be helpful to remember

Saw the uma musume movie. It's a perfect platonic distillation of a sports anime, made by, for, and about deranged freaks (positive). Had a grin on my face continuously for every moment of the first act. And the theatrical subs were absolutely *inspired*; probably the best I've ever seen.

oh also the soundtrack was excellent, and featured a lot of fairly complex stuff I wasn't expecting; some 12/8 in there, and probably some other weird time-signature or triplet shenanigans I was having trouble trying to count

I want a different set of people to be afraid of me, and I want it to be for different reasons.

It has none of the negative features you'd expect of a gacha adaptation and instead simply has characters with an unyielding drive to surpass their own limits, and conveys that with a pure electric intensity that makes their frenetic energy feel contagious.

It's kinda crazy how good this movie is; it feels like a gacha game adaptation has no earthly right to be anywhere near this level. But it strips away every layer of complexity and drills down into the very core of sports fiction, through the extremely simple and accessible endeavor of Running Fast.

A phone number associated with Wade is linked to Johnny MAGA, according to a WIRED review of publicly available records, and the connection was confirmed by a source close to the White House. Wade and the White House did not respond to requests for comment.

The Johnny MAGA account was created in September 2021, according to its X profile. (It originally used a different handle, which referenced Wade’s birth year, according to records reviewed by WIRED.) While the account’s earliest available posts focused on NFTs, it has been a consistent pro-Trump presence since at least 2022. The operator of the Johnny MAGA account has not disclosed an official relationship with the White House while operating the Johnny MAGA X account. Multiple media outlets, including Mother Jones, TownHall, and the New York Post, have all linked out to posts on the Johnny MAGA account seemingly as organic reflections of public sentiment on political issues.

I have no reason to believe they are, and if they were it would be very illegal (and there are toothy regulators for this in eg the EU)

the most important thing in the discord age verification clarification post is that *the verification partner doesn't have your user ID, and Discord doesn't have your identity data*; these two pieces of information never exist in the same place at the same time

I do think habitual chatbot usage is kind of like smoking; there's a range of outcomes, and we very clearly see the worst ones (psychosis, delusions, addiction) but they're all negative. thousands with the cognitive equivalent of being out of breath after one flight of stairs.
