I don't know if there is a formal distinction in computer science between large language models and small language models, but since the key to success with machine learning models is specialization, it may be the case that LLMs are almost never useful even in narrow applications.
Generative AI is career death. Generalized LLMs are expertise killers.
If there is to be any useful future for LLMs at all, it will be in focused, specialized contexts where a subject matter expert builds a tool for a particular purpose and trains it to do a very specific thing well.
