Last night @ Denver Indian Center for the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition (NABS), I met Denise Lajimodiere, the Poet Laureate of North Dakota. I read "there is light there" from my book "is(ness)". I read the poem in honor of Indigenous elders who survived this era.
Confirmed. Off to the land of blue, John Waters, in March 2026 (Thursday, Friday, Saturday). Iβll be in Baltimore for AWP. This is going to be a quick trip. AWP must be popular this year. I think this trip is going to feel more like a 1-night stand. Hopefully, I will connect with some of you there.
Here is an interview I did with Radha Marcum, author of "Pine Soot Tendon Bone" (Washington Prize 2023).

The secret is out now.
I am excited to be named Colorado's 11th Poet Laureate for 2026 - 2027 by Governor Jared Polis @govofco. I join the ranks of the great poets who preceded me. To be honest, this news came as a total surpriseβI never dreamed Iβd be in this position.

Thursday evening I received stupendous. I would have never thought I would be taking on this task for what I am about to do! I am terrified but mostly excited. There are a few who already know, but that is all I can say for now because... "it's a surprise. Do you like surprises?"

Rajiv Mohabir, Hillary Leftwich, & Crisosto Apache will each read pieces that reflect resistance, care, & truth.
Isis ... ICE both government sanctioned entities ordered (normalized) to murder (assassinate) its citizens without impunity. American citizens stand by and do nothing but post on social media. Maybe, modern American citizens will know what Indigenous people's went through. Something to think about.
A distinguished voice unnecessarily lost to senseless violence.

The image is an announcement from Gnashing Teeth Publishing for their Pushcart Prize selection for 2026. Crisosto Apacheβs poem GahΓ© DzΓΕ / Mountain Spirits from isness is among them.
My poem βGahΓ© DzΓΕ / Mountain Spiritsβ from my new book βis(ness) has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. Thanks! This means that a poem from each of my books released has been nominated for this award. Now itβs a cross-my-fingers moment until they announce. Maybe 3rd time's a charm?
Did an interview for my new book "is(ness)" for KDNK Radio: Regional Roundup | Episode 130 (last segment of the show). The conversation discusses the title concept of my book and some conceptual ideas for the book. I read "Diminishing Space Between the Mouth". www.kdnk.org/podcast/regi...

Happening tonight (11-7-2025), still time to register for this free event. I am reading from my new poetry collection "is(ness)" & having a conversation with Distiny Leftwich at the Denver Public Library from 6 to 8 pm. Drop what you are doing & come listen. denverlibrary.libcal.com/event/14240369
Writing sacrifice - Allen Ginsberg taught me while attending the Naropa Summer Writing Program back in the early 90s' to "Do not be afraid to kill your darlings." I have sense turned that phrase into "Do not be afraid to rehire those darlings", and repurpose lines or words I have rejected.
Here is a podcast I did about a month ago with The Date Keepers (as in the fruit), which has finally been released. In this episode, I discuss language in poetics.
