In 1951, Henrietta Lacks's cervical cancer cells were taken w/o her consent & used for research.
Her cells, coined HeLa, became the first immortal human cell line. They engendered advances in medicine such as cancer/HIV research, vaccine dev & genome sequencing.

Businesses are not charities. They work on profit margins. Decades of $ is essential for research to progress from an initial discovery to treatment. Most of the dirty work goes on in academic labs.

White House stalls release of approved US science budgets: The administration has not yet released funding Congress allocated to multiple research agencies, so they cannot provide it to funded entities/people - including NIH and NASA. www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Not spending money that is appropriated for science is a tricky subject to explain, but for people in limbo (like myself, as I mentioned yesterday), it can have cause serious career harm.
Many celebrated the NIH budget bill. It’s not supporting science when an unchecked bottleneck still remains.

Dr. Kate Wallis, a developmental and behavioral pediatrician, will discuss the ongoing attacks on evidence-based healthcare policy and the consequences for healthcare delivery in Philadelphia and across the country.
Dr. Andrea Liu, member of the US National Academy of Sciences and the Hepburn Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania, will discuss the importance of US scientists advocating for the protection of both academic freedom and funding.

Scientists cannot afford to treat this as someone else’s issue.
