This is an exciting and busy week for @philadelphiascienceaction.substack.com.

In the birthplace of this country, where we will celebrate 250 years in July, our history shows that Philly is a hub of science, healthcare, education, activism, and advocacy.

Join us in continuing that tradition.

πŸ§ͺ February is #BlackHistoryMonth

In 1951, Henrietta Lacks's cervical cancer cells were taken w/o her consent & used for research.

Her cells, coined HeLa, became the first immortal human cell line. They engendered advances in medicine such as cancer/HIV research, vaccine dev & genome sequencing.

Private money cannot replace public funding of science Who should pay for American science? In the current political climate, many are looking to the private sector to compensate for cuts in public funding. At the Harvard School of Public Healthβ€”particula...

A response to the opinion that private $ can replace the NIH.

Businesses are not charities. They work on profit margins. Decades of $ is essential for research to progress from an initial discovery to treatment. Most of the dirty work goes on in academic labs.

Not spending money that is appropriated for science is a tricky subject to explain, but for people in limbo (like myself, as I mentioned yesterday), it can have cause serious career harm.

Many celebrated the NIH budget bill. It’s not supporting science when an unchecked bottleneck still remains.

This Is Our Fight: How Immigration Enforcement Threatens Science and Healthcare By Amanda Rabinowitz, Ph.D.

Decades of evidence show that immigrants make disproportionate contributions to scientific discovery and technological advancement. As of 2019, nearly one in four STEM workers in the United States was foreign-born.

Scientists cannot afford to treat this as someone else’s issue.
