How to Write Better Drafts What Elizabeth Bishop’s drafts can teach us about letting go and just starting.

Elizabeth Bishop wrote sixteen drafts of "One Art." The first is practically a journal entry. The last is one of the greatest poems in English. What happened in between was play. I wrote a new Substack post on drafting, play, and forgetting what you know: substack.com/home/post/p-...

Reading “To Avenge a Dead Glacier”, a cracking collection of stories by Shane Tivenan. (His 2020 RTE Francis McManus winner is well worth a read too - on the RTE website)

The National Year of Reading celebrates the ‘joy’ of books. But let’s not forget they can also be deeply troubling, too | Charlotte Higgins Encounters with great art can be absorbing, unsettling and even painful. How has this been tamed into ‘reading for pleasure’, asks Charlotte Higgins, the Guardian’s chief culture writer

Reading for pleasure? Reading for survival. Reading for the human condition. Reading for thinking.

Great piece by Charlotte Higgins & I can't think of a time when I haven't wanted to the world to just stop and read.

still can't get over how one of the neatest tricks of writing is writing the wrong thing and thinking "this is wrong" and fixing it to the right thing, but never really being able to write the "right" thing first

We didn't bastardise the English language into "ye", "yiz", "youse" and "yousins" to have Irish people unconnected to the US or other places it's used in saying "y'all", unless you're referring to the town in Cork we've PERFECTLY ADEQUATE second person plural pronouns at HOME

No other word has done more damage to the craft of writing in recent years than “content”. Even if you’re using the word “content” ironically, or as a cute little joke, don’t. When someone calls writing “content” they’re pissing on someone’s hard work & passion. “Content” is Technosatan’s henchword.
