On this day in 1927 Gabriel Garcia Marquez was born.

He was the son of a Colombian pharmacist who went into writing. He was inspired by his grandfather's tales of war and his grandmother's tales of folklore.

He won the 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature (the first Colombian to do so).

On this day in 1986 Sarah J Maas was born.

She started writing what would become 'A Court of Thorns and Roses' online when she was only 16. Now it is one of the most best selling series of fantasy books.

Tolkien based Helms Deep on Cheddar Gorge, where he went on his honeymoon.

The descriptions of the fighting in the series was largely influenced by Tolkien's experience as a soldier in the First World War.
