As I stated, that is kind of my job - to teach students to do well in exams, but that's not really mathematics. And to really understand maths, it helps tremendously if you like maths.
Far too teachers themselves enjoy maths, and so the greater need for maths specialists (which too few are).

It seems like Prof Weiss and I are in agreement, but I also hope that he would agree that it is rare in secondary schools (maybe less so at college level?) for teachers to take this attitude. Not so rare that you won't find some in most schools, but far more often teachers teach to exams.

No. I teach up to 18, but even kids who study maths as an option for A-level or International Baccalaureate (16-18 year olds) generally have quite a negative view of maths.
