Bottom trawling is horribly destructive to coastal ocean ecosystems, and deep-sea mining will do the same to the open ocean. #OceanFilm π

We had 200 people attend the meeting, from academia, industry, and the community. United and extremely engaged, I've never seen a meeting like it. We are pushing this issue on all fronts. I've written some rough notes. docs.google.com/document/d/1...
#WorldScienceFestivalBrisbane #cityofScience is up and running. Come down and learn about all the cool science going on in Queensland. Lots of kidβs activities. We are partnering with #BlueSeaBooks to showcase the mysterious world of Halimeda bioherms on the northern Great Barrier Reef. #HALO
Map of earthquakes and volcanoes around Southeast Asia.
You've heard of the Pacific Ring of Fire. But you haven't heard of the Southeast Asian Ring of Fire! That's because we're defining it for the first time in our new post. We think these two features are distinct in important ways - check it out. π§ͺ βοΈ

After aeons & untold millions, the fences have finally come down. Wonder if it will actually function as intended.
Not a bad way to start the week! Iβm excited for this to be online
The ocean is the reason weβre surviving climate change.
A lava lamp is sitting on the grass and is labelled "lava lamp". There's another lava lamp below the ground, in the dirt and it's labelled "magma lamp". It's a handy way to remember the difference between lava (molten rock above ground) and magma (underground). I've put a watermark on it "Β© @NadWGab, 2017" because it's been stolen more times than I can count.
I made this back in 2017 on Twitter and it's been stolen so many times so I better post it here too before someone else does! π§ͺβοΈ #geology #minerals #volcanology
Iβm really pleased to share the publication of our collaborative study on Slamet volcano! This work was the culmination of my PhD, and represents a big step forward in our understanding of Slametβs melt storage and eruptive potential. Open access link below!

If you're interested in Antarctic contribution to sea level, and/or Antarctic climate variability - I've got a paper coming out in Nature Geoscience in 10.5hrs - while I am asleep. I'll post a summary in my morning.
Today in Nature Geoscience, a culmination of NINEish years of hard work by 40+ people, lead by the indefatigable @otherrock.bsky.social
Iso2k is the source of & inspiration for some of my best science, and definitely the source of some of my favourite science people.
I hope you (and everyone else there) is safe, mate!
In Australia, the absence of relief in the interior means that the timescales of groundwater flow can be even older ... maybe even millions of years.
And, interestingly, this means that tilting due to dynamic stresses from the mantle may influence the flow patterns.
βοΈ @earth-science.bsky.social - just popping in here to explain how things work on the list.
