This is a new one.
We authors for a while were plagued with scams disguised as book clubs. "Hi we picked your book for our book club" followed by "we need a lot of money."
Today: I got an email purportedly from another AUTHOR.
It's definitely a scam. These are so painfully cruel.

I've been getting of these types of emails every day. One from a person claiming to be a Scholastic editor.
I've been around the publishing business long enough to see them for what they are. But I can see how people might fall for them, especially in an industry that's so hard to break into.

I got one from "Jeff Kinney" today claiming he read and loved my children's nonfiction book about the Voyager space missions. It was from a gmail account with the handle authorjeffk.
It's exhausting being an author right now.

The cover of the picture book Norman and the Smell of Adventure by Ryan T. Higgins. The illustration shows Norman the porcupine with a backpack and walking stick, trekking across a hilly landscape.
Norman and the Smell of Adventure by Ryan T. Higgins. Who doesn't love a story about a porcupine who is best friends with a tree? A thoughtful continuation of this series.

The cover of the picture book What Kind of Car Does a T. Rex Drive? by Mark Lee and Brian Biggs. The illustration depicts a very large T. Rex at a car lot.
What Kind of Car Does a T. Rex Drive? by Mark Lee and Brian Biggs is very silly. I liked how the kids were so much smarter than the grown-up.

Iβm calling to tell Representative ____ to oppose H.R. 7661. This bill would pressure schools to remove titles that discuss lived experiences that some politicians find controversial. I donβt think trans people are controversial. (contin)

A photograph, in burnt-orange colour tones, of a maple leaf with a heart-shaped hole forms the background of a square image. 19 book covers are arranged in a pyramid shape down the right-hand side and across the bottom. To the left, white text in an arc says "Hidden Gems!" Below that more white text reads: "19 books by Canadian authors you may never have heard of (but will totally wonder how your bookshelves lived without!)"
At the top of the pyramid of covers, to the right, it provides the date of the promo: March 1st to 15th, only on Itchi.io.
The books involved are as follows, from the top of the pyramid and then down, from left to right:
The Lion
The Erstwhile Tyler Kyle
The Dragon Next Door
River of Crows
Hope is the Thing with Feathers
The Clockwork Empire
Flesh and Bone
Goblin Girl
Moonshadow's Guardian
Your Blood and Bones
Winner Takes All
The Flaws of Gravity
Scrap Metal Angel
Destined to be Normal
Clipped
Bloody Spade
Baker Thief
Path of the Warrior
Prince Ewald the Brave

I wrote a YA modern-day gender-swapped Hamlet, so you'd think it would be Hamlet.
But it's not! It's King Lear.
(and I also love Romeo + Juliet)

I was not prepared for the wave of nostalgia that hit with those Jungle Book references in Gorillaz's "The Mountain, The Moon Cave and The Sad God."
This is a great example of artists leaning into what makes their art weirdly and uniquely human!
