He had been accused as driver of the boat, of unauthorised transportation&causing a shipwreck, even though all witnesses testified he was acting under threat&in a state of emergency.
This acquittal sends a clear message: Criminalisation of people seeking safety is unjust.

The shipwreck occurred off the coast of Skala Sykamnias after the boat was detected near the shore by the Hellenic Coast Guard. Seven people (three women, three children and one man) lost their lives, while one girl remains missing to this day. All families who survived lost loved ones.

On Thursday 5/3/2026, a survivor of the deadly #shipwreck of 3/4/2025 in #Lesvos will stand trial in Mytilene. He is a #refugee who lost his wife and their two-year-old son in the shipwreck. He and their five-year-old daughter survived.
