The pair of points at the centre of this image, taken with our VLT, are an old stellar couple known as AFGL 4106.

No matter how bad the weather is here, it's nothing compared to conditions on Uranus. There, winter means 40 years of darkness & auroras that follow the planet's tilted, twisted magnetic field.

JWST just provided the best look yet at those Uranian aurora displays. 🧪🔭

Hi y’all. El Paso City Councilmember here but also fellow avgeek. Not a usual sub for me, but here we are. We’re all trying to work out why this crazy NOTAM was issued. What I know so far (as of midnight zero six local Wednesday): • It isn’t a typo or an error. FAA issued this NOTAM intentionally as written. • Nobody local got advance notice. And I mean nobody — neither civilian nor military leadership. • Military does not have carte blanche exemption. Army is fretting about their flights tomorrow just as much as everyone else. • Albuquerque Center did not get advance notice.
