This is more anti-intellectualism. People like these movies but can't stand smart people or that art can be more than a soup can's ingredients. So they rationalize things they like by saying they aren't about anything.

Yes! I love Suspense, Inner Sanctum, CBS Mystery Theater, The Whistler, Mysterious Traveler, Dark Fantasy, and Escape among others. My favorite is probably Agnes Moorehead's "Sorry, Wrong Number."
When those are done, you also have Equal Rites as a prototype of the Tiffany Aching novels. I loved that one, but I don't think it gets enough recognition for its empowering themes.
