Finally got a chance to read the article! Wow! Is there anything we can do to halt/delay this?
Historically @noaa.gov was a ocean and coastal science and management agency, but under this admin they have sadly turned into an ocean exploitation agency.

Hello there! I keep forgetting this lovely app exists!🙈 So is anyone doing a challenge next month? I know it’s the Month of Challenges and I’m sure there are lots happening but I’ve yet to see a prompt list that speaks to me? But I’ve only seen maybe 2! #art
I sought comment from NOAA and the Department of Defense on this and received this reply today from NOAA's spokesperson. They suggest we use the surviving ATMS microwave that degrades significantly at the edges. You can see how much worse off we'd be with Erick last week if we only had ATMS.
A comparison of what we see from geostationary infrared imagery vs. what we get when passive microwave imagery like what SSMIS provides is available.
This is Hurricane Otis in 2023 as it was gearing up for extremely rapid intensification prior to impacting Acapulco as a category 5 storm.
UPDATED: June 24, 2025. In compliance with Executive Order 14303 (“Restoring Gold Standard Science”), the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy’s June 23, 2025 Memorandum (“Agency Guidance for Implementing Gold Standard Science in the Conduct & Management of Scientific Activities”), 15 USC § 2904 (“National Climate Program”), 15 USC § 2934 (“National Global Change Research Plan”), and 33 USC § 893a (“NOAA Ocean and Atmospheric Science Education Programs”), you have been redirected to NOAA.gov. Future research products previously housed under Climate.gov will be available at NOAA.gov/climate and its affiliate websites.
This is the redirect notice you get now at the top of the page when you go to climate.gov. I wrote in this NOAA focused post a week or so ago that the primary fed gov't climate site looked to be on the chopping block - now it seems to have come to pass.

The fact that NWS field offices are not able to operate 24/7 anymore in growing number of locations, & that offices servicing major population centers no longer have supervisory meteorologists in charge, & that radar techs are becoming unavailable, is highly alarming.
