Can someone explain to me how www.gnu.org/philosophy/w... is incompatible with the idea that training LLMs on copyrighted free software is fine as long as the output isn't copyrightable?

Mr. Robot Uses ProtonMail, But It Still Isn't Fully Secure The latest encrypted email service to rise in popularity is ProtonMail, which attracted wide attention after it was featured on Mr. Robot. But how secure is it really?

LRS: I pointed out the MLAT issue with Proton for Wired back in 2015 www.wired.com/2015/10/mr-r...

I presume there is already a bunch of machinery in place from the reproducible builds project; the question would be, how difficult would it be to adapt to this tech, and what project structure would provide for independent verification without individuals needing to do it themselves?

Another entry to file under "Proton Mail is not 'more secure email,' email is never secure." What should you do instead? Read my guide! www.404media.co/proton-mail-...

The answer with a group of that size is Always "dim sum"

05.03.2026 18:35 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

(And, I'd also argue, code has a mystique that other engineering deliverables don't. No one romanticizes design docs or roadmaps or documentation. So in another sense, this phrases pushes back on the "code is supreme" mindset that many developers share, which often leads to exclusionary behaviour)

05.03.2026 18:27 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

This is why your staff and principal level engineers are spending at most a fraction of their time coding and spend far more time mentoring people on improving their coding skills than writing things directly themselves. Because in *mastery of the profession*, coding is not the hard part

05.03.2026 18:25 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I agree but I also think that statement is taken out of context. "Coding isn't the hard part" isn't something you say to someone who doesn't know how to code. It's a recognition that among a group of skilled software engineers, the most limited skills tend to be design and communication, not coding

iNaturalist-facilitated rediscovery of Monarda mexicana (Lamiaceae) in high-elevation habitats of Durango, Mexico | Phytotaxa

the "lost" species Monarda mexicana is still out there! Known from just 2 historical collections (most recent from the 1950s). Imagine my joy in stumbling on a picture of it on @inaturalist.bsky.social !!! We've now documented the first known modern populations and revived the species name:

"Artists peak at 30", "30 under 30", "by 30 you should" ridiculous. Arts industries capital craves young people to exploit and burn out. It doesn't want older artists thriving and guiding the young. It also doesn't want artists to exist. Stop letting cannibals tell you you only matter on a plate.

Was talking to a person earlier today who complained than an LLM "lied" to them.

Me: LLMs can't lie.
Them: what?! butβ€”
Me: LLMs can't tell the truth, so how can they lie? The code doesn't know the difference
