As I've watched what's going on in #Minneapolis, I have thought several times about this chapter. Much like Saruman, the administration has vastly miscalculated, and many, many hobbits have learned how to organize and resist.
When the hobbits return, their experiences and skills from the War of the Ring allow them to free and rebuild their home. It is in some ways the entire point of the book - the transformation of the hobbits into an engine of #resistance to oppression.
For those who have only seen the #LOTR movies, it's missing one of the most important parts of the books, the "Scouring of the Shire." While the War of the Ring is going on, Saruman's forces spoil and plunder the Shire.

The Rev Fred Rogers (of Mr Roger’s Neighborhood) once told us in times of crisis to look for the helpers. In the midst of the horror in Australia, we should pay attention to Ahmed Al Ahmed, a Muslim man who saw fellow human beings threatened and acted out of conscience at great risk to himself. ⚓️
As a person who works in interfaith relations, the truth is that there is much more that unites us than divides us. While nearly all religions have holy war somewhere in their history, there are also large swaths of tolerance, empathy, and cooperation that most people don’t pay attention to. ⚓️
