I love writing emails referring to myself in the third person. I have not been fundamentally broken as a person by academia.

This week, PhD Student @dchayes.ca sheds some light on how we talk to spacecraft on and around other planets: york-pvl.blogspot.com/2026/02/talk... The situation on the red planet is particularly complex and therefore particularly interesting! Like any infrastructure, maintenance is critical

A screenshot of a quoted tweet from the Ottawa Senators that reads:

A match up that's felt destined for the last 365 days

Join us Sunday morning at Bert's Bar at the Canadian Tire Centre for the Gold Medal Watch Party

Doors open at 7:30 AM

Breakfast buffet available for purchase for attendees

The quote reads:

I never thought the Ottawa Senators would be inviting us to the Canadian Tire Centre to cheer AGAINST Brady Tkachuk and Jake Sanderson. But here we are.

No, but I did see that one as well. I eventually tracked it down as a screenshot from a video where the camera flies up and over the terrain, which obviously makes it not a real image / video.

A photo of a TTC paper transfer. It's a small, black and white piece of paper, with the time issue listed as 3:17 PM, and the day as 039, February 8, 2026. At the bottom of the transfer, it states "Not valid at: Mt. Dennis Station."

For many years, researchers were unable to independently verify the alleged existence of Line 5 Eglinton.

This has been one of the wildest things for me. Before I started E I was like "I don't really have dysphoria in any meaningful way," but after (almost) a year and a half I can look back like yeah I kind of really did, actually, but just didn't know how to identify it.

Though I would be surprised if this was the case given the number of places I continue to find the old name hanging out untouched.

It is, of course, alternately possible that I did this myself and just have no recollection of doing so, which would track.

Was filling out staffing availability yesterday and saw that my name had been changed, something that I cannot recall doing myself, suggesting that someone on the inside at JPL must have noticed and done it for me πŸ₯Ή

The T.A. for my lab section was great. Very helpful and prompt, and the grading was fair too.

Finally got course evaluations back for my first lab teaching experience and needless to say I will be riding this high for the next week.

Honestly the one thing that's most seriously making me contemplate wandering off the academic/research path after finishing my degree... I love doing the science but I really hate the thought of spending so much time hunting down money to do the science.

Kudos to our project scientist who helps advocate for these every ~year when I think the view might work and we've got a little bit of energy and time spare in a plan. Doing the science on the day to day is important. Taking a moment now and again to do something just for art is important as well.

Apparently Google will now let you change your email address without losing access to your account AND while keeping the old address as an alias for the new one, which needless to say is a gamechanger for me personally.

Sometimes you're reading a book that decides to violently smack you in the face with the fact that it was written by a straight man in the late 2000s.
