The frustrating thing about that is that I agree that women (and everyone else) should be allowed to be sexy, but people like Grummz think women on particular shouldn't be allowed to be anything but sexy.
I agree that characters need to be appealing and interesting. Sexiness is easy, but also lazy. Sexy characters can be bland too, but making a character that isn't attractive appealing is difficult. some characters are made deliberately unattractive, without anything else to compensate (eg Concord)

yeah fan art is probably the easiest way to get attention, but the audience investment is shallower. Also, drawing "fan art" of the current flavor-of-the-month media without personal interest seems soulless.
I'm not a particularly popular artist, but here's some of my observations:
1. draw stuff that looks good on a phone
2. narrative, story
3. bold, attention-grabbing composition
4. close-up shots > full body
