There’s not that much historical fiction on the Women’s Prize long list, but I am excited to read The Others by Sheena Kalayil, set in 1989 East Germany.

Also pleased to see the incredible Wild, Dark Shore on the list. Such a gripping and absorbing read.

England's Highest War Memorials Dr Kathryn White investigates the Great Gifts round in the Lake District and hikes Great Gable

And finally, an article that ended up 2 years in the making. When 2 of rural England’s biggest debates of the interwar years collided: public access to the countryside & the desire to commemorate the fallen. The result? England’s highest war memorials

I’m really enjoying writing about books, especially historical fiction, and reaching out beyond my usual time periods.

In this article, I talk about six of the best historical novels from last year:

The People's Memorial Dr Kathryn White visits the war memorials of Kings Park, Perth

The Perth war memorial might be the only one (at least that I’ve ever seen) that includes a public donation box, ingeniously built out of naval shells.

I respect the previous reader of this library book who was clearly very frustrated with its accuracy yet persisted with reading the whole thing.

France on Trial by Julian Jackson is a good English-language book (if a little dry on the legal stuff) about Petain’s trial and explores his legacy.
