Some job news: I recently started as a senior editor @thedailybeast.bsky.social in New York. Excited for the new adventure during such an important time for journalism and the country. Itβs already great fun.
Washington Post got their hands on internal documents from DOGE showing the entire plan to implement resegregation. They're going to purge minorities from government by calling them DEI.

Termination notices going out this afternoon to more than 300 employees of the National Cancer Institute. Access likely ends today. Four weeks paid leave and thatβs it.
Strong power move for Team Cancer.

I can think of nothing worse than going on a reporting trip with Nicholas Kristoff, which I imagine involves hopping in one cab after another for anecdotes. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/04/o...

that's not the real reason I stayed put on December 25. Like many gay kids who grew up in a small town-in my case, on the Arizona-Mexico border-I was so desperate to get out I thought it would never happen. When it finally did and I left for college "back East," I felt I had escaped. When I visited-in summer or spring-I'd look out the window in relief as the plane back to my new life took off. Somehow-implausibly-I'd broken free again.
From my days @theprospect.bsky.social. Merry Xmas! πππ« prospect.org/civil-rights...
Wrote this when on staff at @theprospect.bsky.social about going home for Xmas for first time in 10 yrs. read it around now every year to remember what it felt like to be alone and gay at the holidays and to keep in mind all the LGBTQ+ ppl who still are. prospect.org/civil-rights...
Omg whyyyyyy I thought we were finally rid of throw bozo.
Yes but theyβre also part of the cost problem. They get paid a lot more than their counterparts in European countries with universal healthcare
Same with the Anglo-Saxons. One of the running conceits in their literature is getting someone drunk on mead, making them promise something, then they have to deliver once theyβre sober.
I literally feel queasy every time I see a picture of his arrogant, self-satisfied face. Same with Elon Musk.
The Texas Observer is hiring for a Director of Development. Get all the details here:
For laypeople, what was the legal reasoning? Due process claim?
Whoaβthe Montana Supreme Court holds that its state constitution protects the right to "a stable climate system," and strikes down a law that barred consideration of greenhouse gas emissions when permitting new fossil fuel projects. juddocumentservice.mt.gov/getDocByCTra...

"The Democratic Party lacks the energy of a determined opposition β it is adrift, listless in the wake of defeat. Too many elected Democrats seem ready to concede that Trump is some kind of avatar for the national spirit β a living embodiment of the American people."
An interview with TPMβs Josh Marshall, who argues that protectors of democracy need to create a massive fundraising vehicle right now to defend the targets of Trumpβs coming retribution tour.
The other question here: Will the markets restrain or deter Trump from the worst promises heβs made? The bankers seem optimistic β¦
I'm normally very dovish, but even I admit that the case for a rate cut was pretty evenly balanced given recent data. And projections about future Fed policy are almost pointless: everything depends on whether Trump really does what he's been saying he will, in which case hard to see any cuts
This has ALWAYS been what is going to happen. The way that tariffs work makes them perfect vehicles for presidential corruption. If you're on team Trump you get a waiver. If you're not, well ... sucks to be you. That's why the inaugural committee is cleaning up with CEOs.
