The unexpected danger from βember stormsβ during severe wildfires
Understanding the erratic behaviour of wind and embers at fire fronts could save lives.
π₯πͺοΈ Ember storms, rivers of burning embers near the ground, pose a hidden threat during wildfires, igniting homes from unexpected sides. UNSW Canberra research suggests redesigning fire-prone areas to disrupt embers and save lives.

Up to 40% of bushfires in parts of Australia are deliberately lit. But weβre not doing enough to prevent them
Emergency, public health and climate action plans rarely mention deliberately lit fires and how to prevent them. And there are few services for offenders to stop them lighting fires again.
28% of bushfires in south-east Australia are deliberately lit, and the trend is international.
However, most action plans against wildfires donβt take this type of cause into consideration.
π How could we prevent them?
π Who lights these fires & why?
