Our NHS. On Thursday night my lovely chap tripped and cut his hand badly. Drove 25 miles to Trauma centre. Seen within 5 mins. X-ray, dressings, pain relief and apt with plastic surgeon today. This pm 3 surgeons mended tendons/ nerves saving his flex and sensation.Brilliant and free. Thank you NHS

Hello #bbcsport
We are enjoying the #Olympics ( especially some of the brilliant young commentators) but have a new game - guess the tune on the ice-dancing. The balance on the sound is a bit rubbish ….. pretty crucial for ice-dancing πŸ€”

Hey @thetimes.com what is ’racism’ - surely depicting the Obamas as monkeys is just old fashioned racism?

On the back of this consistently excellent reporting I am going to take out a subscription to the FT.

Just caught up with @bbcstever.bsky.social and his equally excellent producer Ben Tavener on Panorama. Walking a tightrope at a time when other media organisations are absent. Critical to have such wise heads on the ground dealing so diplomatically with Russian state controlled media

Met Museum photo of an Ancient Egyptian artist’s painting of a swallow on a flake of limestone, dated to the New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, joint reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III, c. 1479-1458 BC.

The sparrow stands in profile with head to the right. It is delicately painted with a pinkish body. The outline and details are highlighted in a reddish/brown pigment. Its legs, eye, and beak are painted black. Limestone flake dimensions Height 6.6 cm x Width 10.6 cm.

This may have been a practice drawing of the sparrow hieroglyph which was used for words meaning β€˜small’, β€˜poor’, or β€˜bad’.

Egyptian artisans who decorated tombs and temples made practice sketches on flakes of limestone which are known by egyptologists as ostraca (singular: ostracon). Sometimes the drawings were used as a template when transferring an image to the wall of a tomb or a temple. Limestone flakes were readily available for this purpose as by-products of the construction of temples and rock-cut tombs. A number of ostraca were recovered at Deir el-Bahri during the 1922-23 MMA excavations.

Artists have always loved to sketch!

Sketch of a sparrow from Egypt dated c. 1479–1458 BC.

Some 3,500 years ago in Egypt, artists used flakes of limestone as sketchpads!

I wish more programmes focused on the unfairness we are collectively inflicting on young people as @martinlewis.moneysavingexpert.com and @bbcnewsnight.bsky.social do here. My grown up children watched with a weariness and I watched with anger and guilt. We need much more attention on the young.

Not the most important issue by any means on a shocking news day, but slightly distracted by the dog belonging to the chap being interviewed on @channel4news.bsky.social by @cathynewman.bsky.social rejecting an excellent looking bed for the sofa

This was in my Christmas stocking. Forensic and shocking- even though I thought I knew the ins and outs. Good to see former colleagues Jane French and Matt Bardo referenced. A reminder of how the odds are stacked against decent everyday people. Bravo @privateeyenews.bsky.social and Richard Brooks

So many questions. Who signed the contract for each side? Why wasn’t it disclosed ? How has it just come to light?

The Christmas issue of The BMJ is coming soon!

To get us in the mood we asked comedian @michaelspicer.bsky.social to have a look at last year's issue, and respond to some articles.

@rorycj.bsky.social is a good story teller - and I’m so pleased this worked for him. But what stands out is his description of the people who treated him - from all parts of the world. Everyone using the NHS and our care system should take note - and echo Rory’s thanks.

The BBC drama on #nazaninzaghari-ratcliffe is outstanding - extraordinary acting and writing. But mostly a portrait of a profoundly courageous woman and her family. The same could not be said of some of the politicians involved.
